Does anyone see any substantial difference while shoping, buying the store (generic) brand vs. buying the well known name brand product? Is there really any difference aside from the price? We purchase generic versions of our medications to save money.. do we do the same with our food?

i have found many generic products to be just as good as the name brand. they are not made cheap to compromise quality, they just don't go to unneeded expenses.

Well for me it depends on what item I am buying. For certain things I will buy the store brands. For certain things I will only buy name brands. For instance I will only by Heinz Ketchup and Hellman's Mayonnaise. I can taste the difference! And yet for other things I can't! If I can get a cheaper price and not really mind the taste the I'm all for it! As you said if I can take generic meds, the I can surely eat generic foods!

LOl Each time I see my typo I cringe... I can spell STORE Really, I can. LOL The meds are the one that really strike a bell in my head.. what if we thought of generic meds as store brand items..... would we still purchase them? We opt for the generic brand of meds because they are cheaper.. a heck of alot cheaper... it is correct that we do noe "taste" them... but when we chow down on generic popcorn, or cheese doodles.. are we really tasting them? LOL

OK, Your questions can be answered with a Yes and a NO. What I have found with Name brand. IT REALLY DEPENDS ON WHAT IT IS: Sometimes, I will NOT subsititute. SODA POP: NO ONE CAN MAKE A BETTER DR PEPPER OR PEPSI OR 7 UP i have tried store brand,NO WAY ! lol potato chips- WHAT IS BETTER THEN A RUFFLES OR LAYS? Once in a while I find a brand I will go with- and naturally when you get to like it- the stop making it! I truly believe that it is all territorial. Even the name brand has different bakeries and bottling companies and packaging. here is something for ya. MAYONNAISE- NEXT TIME YOU GO TO THE STORE- EAST COAST: LOOK AT A HELLMAN'S MAYONNAISE: known as Best Foods - West of the Rockies WEST COAST: lOOK FOR BEST FOODS will saya on the label - known as Hellman's, East of the Rockies Honest!! I was shocked. All I kept hearing was BestFoods- so now we know here in Montana it is the same thing! cool huh? We thought it was a generic- and it was right there on the label Medications: You also asked about. I had a discussion on Fentanyl patches and I found that THE DURAGESIC BRAND has and EXACT GENERIC by a different company called SANDOZ and it is 1/3 the price! I ACTUALLY THINK THIS MAY BE A GOOD LESSON IN LABELING AND CONSUMER AWARENESS! i HAVE SO MANY OTHER EXAMPLES, but I generally will admit = I buy the BRAND when I can, and Generic when I know I have tried and liked it! I like western family potato chips- but not as much as lays- heheh I like Green Giant Corn , but i will use western family especially because they are less expensive and family loves vegetables! If they dont see the packaging - they may never know! lol

Personally, I think it depends. We could say that name brands give off the illusion of perfection by charging more for their products (research has shown that by charging more, companies can trick people into believing their product is of higher quality when it really isn't). I would buy depending on the product. It's usually best to do some quick research before buying products of a certain brand, as there's no guarantee that the name brand necessarily is of better quality than the store brand. I prefer to listen to the experiences of others from a trusted source first and then make my purchase decisions.

Nice response.. Thank you! That is exactly why I posted, alot of times.. we as a society tend to purchase the name brands, because like you said we are "tricked" into believeing it is of better quality, read the response above from IM tigs.. very very informative!.. All you guys are great with the responses, please keep them coming. I have another question.. LOL, that is just me.. I mean is it that we have to "Show" we buy name brands to portray we can afford this?
