Two sides to every story.

Yesterday during my walk, the Phil Collins song "Two Sides of the Story" came up on my i-pod and it got me to thinking of back when I got divorced. I remember talking to my hairdresser and she was telling me about something her lawyer told her when she had gone through her divorce. There are actually 3 sides to every story. There's what each party involved perceives as well as what actually happened. Because everyone has different values, ideas and upbringing, we all see things differently. Now, this does not mean that either party is lying, it's just that the perception is different. You can really understand this when you hear the reports of tragic events - robberies, accidents and things. Everyone doesn't descirbe the exact same thing. It's also apparent in the game I used to play as a kid - Telephone Line, Operator, Pass it On. One person whispers something into a persons ear (like a red car was parked in the driveway) and they whisper it to the next person and so on. By the time the sentence gets to the end, there was a car accident with 2 people in the hospital but the dog was ok. Yes, my mind tends to wander a bit when I'm doing my walks!

Yes reiny, of course there are 2 sides to every story. Actually, they say 3-yours, mine and the truth! There would have to be. No 2 people would ever be able to see things the same, especially in a divorce or they wouldn't be getting divorced! (I was a legal secretary working for a matrimonial attorney)Oh and yes, that game of telepone hasn't changed a bit. We did that as an excercise when I was in day rehab and the sentence got as screwed up as always! And we all had a really good laugh. And we did it during Anger Management which really made it funny! As I said it is very rare to get 2 sides of a story that are both the same. It's human nature to be an individual.

I don't like to say that the 3rd side is the truth because that implies that the 2 parties are lying. Which isn't really the case (all the time). I prefer to say it's what actually happened since we all bring our own perceptions into any event.

At least your walks aren't boring! LOL It's been my experience however, that most times in the case of divorce, one or both sides always lie. It's like a rule or something! LOL But I know what you mean, which is why people should just stop and take a breath and THINK for a mo, before they jump all over someone.

Oh divorces are such a nasty thing. I vowed to never get married again just so that I'd never have to get divorced again. If my current husband does something to piss me off I think I'll just have to practice using his hunting rifles (I AM JUST KIDDING!!!!)

This is very poignantly true reiny-occasionally I get into an arguement with my wife, it just amazes me how different we see and perieve things-there are times when we completely msconstrue situations merely on the beasis of false perceptions!

The hard part is realizing that neither of you are "wrong" you just see it from totally different views. Everything we do brings with it our past experiences, which are different for everyone. It's kinda amazing if you really sit down and think about it. How do we ever get along???? hehehehe
