I just found out that my doctor is leaving! I am devastated! He has been my doctor for over thirty years! I will miss him greatly! Now I have the task of finding a new one. I don't know where to even begin. Do you keep going to different doctors until you find one you like? Does that mean you have to fill out all new paper work and have all your records transferred each time you try out some new doctor? I don't want to wait until I'm sick to find one, but if I'm not sick what is my excuse for going to the doctor? Do I tell him I need to interview him, so I can decide whether I want him as my doctor? Oh my gosh my head is spinning! Have you ever had to change doctors and if so how did you go about deciding which doctor to go to?

if your doctor has been with you for more than thirty years already, that would mean he's been practicing medicine also for more than thirty years as well, right? that would tell me that he's been around in your area for more than thirty years also, which we all know doctors associates with doctors as well. the point is, he should know someone whom he can trust the way you trusted him. i'm sure the thirty years of being his patient, there should be a bonding that has been created and that is friendship. the best answer that you can get is from him, a referral from him who he think fits for you. so all those interview that you want to have for your new doctor to make sure s/he if the right for you will be cut off and you can assess it as well if that doctor really are good or not when you pay your first visit. your first visit doesn't have to be that you are sick, casual conversation will do and introduce yourself, this off course if his/her clinic is not busy. but the best timing is when or ask your present doctor to be introduced to your new doctor. hope this helps and have given you some pointers and ideas. good luck and stay healthy always.

With any luck he will be referring his patients to someone else, but right now I don't know. I really appreciate your thoughts on this situation. Thanks!

Since he has been your doctor for 30 years he knows your medical history for sure. You can ask him for a referral. Someone he know would cater best to your needs as a patient.

A referral from him would be nice. It would be nicer yet if he was going to stay in the area, so that I could still retain him as my doctor. Thanks!

If I didn't have insurance I wouldn't be able to afford one. I know there are many people out there that don't have a doctor. I should feel lucky. I just hope that there is another comparable doctor available. Thanks for your comment.
