Do you prefer manual or automatic transmission?

I've been driving for well over 10 years now and even though I had the chance to drive automatic cars, I still prefer manual transmission. I have experienced the ease of driving in automatic cars especially if the traffic's heavy and my left foot is free to just relax. However, I want to have more control on how the engine revs up and how fast I could go. It's just me. I really like speed and manual transmissions offer more freedom to go at higher rpms thus making the car reach max speed faster. How about you? Which do you prefer and do you have a unique reason why? Take care all.

Ever since I can remember, we have had automatic cars. My husband (then boyfriend) gave me money to study manual transmission years ago. the problem is, I don't have a car to practice with so I forgot how already. Also, I always have a hard time with first gear. LOL! Beside, with the traffic in our country automatic is the best thing to drive. no clutches, break and accelerator to think of.

Yeah. It really helps a lot in traffic when using automatic. That's too bad, well, I hope you get to practice manual cars. It's much easier to go automatic from manual than vice versa. Nevertheless, always be safe. Take care.

Hi Zeroflash, so your Skyline will definitely be a manual then LOL! I have driven both auomatic and manual and I much prefer manual myself, I feel like I am actually driving the car rather than being on auto pilot, much more control in a manual. Ellie :D

Hey Ellie! Yeah, exactly! It would be a disaster for me if I have an automatic Skyline. I won't reach the speed I want :( ahhhh... 300 km/h.. Yeah, I felt much more control with manual than automatic. The latter helps in traffic though but I still love to shift. Take care!

Although I can see why people would prefer manual - it's more hands on, you have more control, etc... - I go for convenience. Automatic is easier and there's less to go wrong. I did learn to drive a stick and I appreciate having done so because a lot of people don't know how. They are also cheaper than automatics. But, if I had to drive a stick today it would probably take me some time to remember exactly how to do it. But, once I did I would feel like I was really actively driving.

Yeah, that's one of the terms I'm looking for. more actively driving. Yeah, even I feel that automatics are convenient especially with less shifting to worry about. But, I still want that control over the car. Prone to a lot of mistakes as you said. Like the stick isn't pushing through or the transmissions cranks up, uphill mistakes, etc.

Hi, I have driven both auto and manual cars - and I personally prefer auto cars, for 2 main reasons. The traffic jams in the mornings and evenings are simply horrible, so not having to press your clutch every 2 or 3 minutes helps to keep stress down. The second reason is my balancing - I'm very bad at balancing the car on a slope. Sometimes you have to go past these parking booths where you take your ticket to go inside a mall or commercial building. And some of these are built on a slope ...I used to be terrified of them, when I was driving a manual car. Now that I have an auto car, it solves my problem
• Philippines

That's definitely true. The two situations you mentioned are among the advantages of having automatic transmission. Especially the slope. Yeah, on parking lot entrance most of the time, they're elevated and while learning you had to assist using emergency brake just to avoid rolling backwards. I had a day to practice that when I started driving. I can't remember how many times my car chugged and turned off. Stay safe!

hello there bro, if i were to ask i will choose manual even though i had the chance to drive automatic (the first car i drove is my ex's ford lynx) why manual? coz when it comes to parts, it's easier to fixed it & it will not cost that much. unlike automatic cars, it costs alot & it's like you buy a 2nd hand car lol
• Philippines

Hi sis! Yeah, I have a friend who owns an automatic Nissan Exalta and he says that the parts are expensive. I haven't seen the prices personally though. That's rough, almost a 2nd hand car? It rarely happens though that the transmission gets shot but still, it's one of the most expensive parts to replace. Are you still driving now?

No license? Good thing you were careful. But still, both of you on the driver's seat? But yeah, the roads are clearer at the fort. It was easy just to cruise around and learn/practice driving. :D

lol im just joking when i say that it will cost a 2nd hand car but yeah it will cost alot anywayz, nope, i don't drive anymore, ford lynx is my first & last car that i drove lol i remember, my ex & i are in the driver's seat, glad that the window is tinted hahaha.. i practiced at d fort & c6, & take note we don't have driver's license that time, even student..

there is a reason manual trans is much better..... its not just bout the engine revs n speed..... its all bout fuel efficiency... manual trans are WAY more fuel efficient than auto trans.... plus you have total control over the engine.... u can juice better performance.... ive not driven a car many times... (just got my license last week!) but i can tell you for sure that an manual trans is way better than auto trans..... auto trans is for lazy ppl who are just too lazy to shift the stick!! whatever it is, there is nothing like driving a car... all u need is a full tank and an open road.... HAPPY DRIVING PPL!!!

Indeed. The control factor on a manual transmission is better than automatic. You can definitely go up to higher rpms without worrying about the chip shifting it up immediately. And if you have a car that is powerful, you can just stay at low rpms while shifting to save gas. I like automatic transmission as well but I always prefer manual. There are a lot of automatic transmission drivers out there who haven't tried manual yet. I bet some of them, if not all, would likely to drive manual by then.

I had a mitsubishi lancer and now I just have a toyota fx. Right now I just want the cars to run smoothly. Save gas as much as possible since it takes its toll on my salary.... :(

I prefer automatic transmission. Because it is easy to operate . With an automatic car I feel tension free, very relaxed. If it is very bad traffic also it is easy to drive when you are driving a automatic car.

Yeah. It happens to me quite often when I get tensed when shifting especially if I'm in the mid-range speeds of 50-70 km/h. I cranked it a couple of times. ahahaha. Not a dilemma at all when it comes to automatic.

Yeah, it's not that easy to learn manual after driving an automatic. Constant practice might do the trick though. Either way is good though as long as you're enjoying it and at the same time, being safe and defensive. Take care!

Well, I have a driving phobia as it is. I can only drive an automatic. My husband tried to teach me how to drive a manual transmission before we traded the car in. He said I did good but I hated it. He took me out at night when there was no traffic and let me practice. The speed limits were very low though so I don't think I even got higher than 2nd gear. Automatics for me.

Some of the people I know who came from automatic to manual didn't like it as well. It seemed complicated and uncomfortable. How long were you able to drive the manual? How low were the speed limits? Too bad, we don't enforce it a lot here. You'll see some drive at 20 kph on major roads and some do 120+ kph on minor roads. It practically doesn't exist in the metro. Expressways do have speed limits but there are still a lot who go way past it.

That's true as well. You really don't have to worry that much when using automatics as you just depress the gas or the brakes and no need to shift as much. Just to drive, neutral or reverse. Even though I like manual transmission more, I did enjoy automatic on city streets.

I live in a rural area and learned how to drive using a stick shift. I prefer the stick shift for the rural areas because you don't have to stop and go so much like you would have to do in the city where I would prefer a manual. But when your up in a rural area it's so much fun to drive the stick shift on a dirt road! :) happy safe driving to you!

That's very true. It isn't comfortable sometimes when we're stuck in traffic in the city and have to inch through it. Aside from using more gas, it gets really tiring especially if you're in heavy traffic for an hour or so. Oh, and that's one that I haven't tried much. Dirt driving. I did once but not with a powerful car so I just had to go slow or else parts would fall off. Happy safe drivin'.

No one has ever taken the time to show me how to drive a manual. Now that I think about it, no one that I know that owns their car possesses a manual. Can anyone explain to me as to why they supposedly get better gas mileage? I've always wondered why and no one's been able to explain that to me either.

This is just based on my experience. I may be wrong but according to what I've felt on automatic, it shifts at a certain rpm and additional speed isn't attained. more speed, more distance, more savings most of the time. Higher rpms do take a bit more gas but it does give more speed on that gear. More powerful cars get more benefit though. I also noticed when I press the gas pedal on automatic, it engages the clutch while I am stepping on the gas pedal which still uses gas. On manual, I just release the gas while shifting. You'll also notice it when you're idling that the chip gives extra rpm (which uses gas). I'm just not sure if the idling rpm can be modified on automatic.

I really like manual transmission. I don't really have a specific reason, I just have always like how a manual transmission handles. I learned to drive on a 4x4 truck with manual and my first car was a manual, so I am just more comfortable with it I guess.

Yeah, we have different ways to get comfortable and we have the same feeling on a manual transmission. Wow, that's a lot of power I guess. a 4x4 truck. I studied driving on a manual and got used to it as well. I even love shifting. I dunno, but it pumps my adrenaline a bit.

I suggest you give it a try if you have the chance. You'll get used to it in time. Well, I'd have to admit I did enjoy having my left foot resting while driving automatic and as you said, remembering not to shift. I got slightly confused during the vacation I had though. Driving manual and automatic alternately.

I am not a very skilled driver. I am more comfortable using the automatic transmission because it is easier to drive and I won't get any problems when trying to change the gears from gear one to gear two in manuals. I used to drive manual cars before, but I hate it because each time the car engine would stop because I don't know how to control the clutch while shifting gears. Now that I own an automatic transmission car, I never drive a manual car anymore. I can go everywhere with ease and I don't have to think about changing gears. I am not very concerned about speed because I don't like speeding. Most of the time I would drive on the first or second lane only.

Hey Bro, I couldn't imagine you driving an automatic. I prefer manual as you do, I need to be at all time alert when driving specially at long drive or at night, automatic would be so simple for me, like doing nothing that I could easily feel bored or sleepy. Again like you when I tell the car to go she goes. I am wondering though how the mitsubishi's INVECS feels like.

Hey buddy! Yeah, I've driven automatic cars a lot of times. In fact, when we were on vacation, we rented 2 cars for a month and they were both automatic. I need a short drive (about a few blocks away), I'll just take my car with me which is manual. Yeah, I've had the chance to drive a lancer with invecs. It was convenient to shift from automatic to manual. It's a bit weird though as I'm not used to shifting gears with that shift stick. I think that was in 2003. The one that where evo 7 got its looks from.

I have driven both but I would have to say i prefer automatic transmission the most becasue it doesnt really take any thought. When I was driving a manual car I once burned out the clutch and had to pay 800.00 dollars. I also dont like how they slip backwards when you are on a hill. That could potentially lead to an accident.

That's a real nice analysis for automatic transmission. Yeah, there will mostly likely be a time when a new driver would have to learn how to handle steep uphills on a manual transmission. The engine chugs, turns off, and the car will hang and slip backwards. Definitely not a problem on automatic transmission. And yeah, I can even smell a burnt clutch. That was really expensive. :(

I only know how to drive automatic cars because I have never been taught how to drive stick shift cars, even though my friend has given me a few lessons a while back and I can get the car into first gear, and the highest I ever got to was like third gear because we were going down mine and my fiances road which is very short and dirt, and I would love to finish learning because I have always wanted to drive a stick shift truck, because it would be so awesome.

You could still try. What kind of truck specifically? Like the F-150s? I practiced on busy streets though with lots of public transportation around. You could try driving on the interstate. You'll get used to it though and it's often convenient to know both. ^_^ Just always be safe my friend.

We have the same passion. Speed! Sorry for the word but it sucks big time for me if I drive a fairly powerful car that's automatic. I like high RPMs.
