are dogs really taller when they sit than when they stand? when i was in elementary one of the most popular animal riddles we had was about an animal who is taller when he sits than when he stands. the answer was the dog. i really don't see any difference between my dog's height when she's standing or when she's sitting.

hmm.. I'm thinking to check on chankee's height.. maybe tomorrow coz I'm sure he's sleeping at this time.lol. maybe it's the illussion of height when a dog sits coz their body goes vertically, when they stand its horizontal, but if you observe their feet on the ground, the way they stand is just the same as the way they sit.. aha! i know, just popped into my head that maybe because when they stand their head tends to level the the height of their body, and when they sit, it also levels the position of their body.. otherwise it'll look kind of wrong..lol. hehe. just like us humans! we're tall when we stand and short when we crawl, the other way around goes for dogs, now it makes sense.. lol.. or.. if its not working, well ask the mythbusters to solve that..lol.

I think that depends on how long the dog's body is. My dog is 'square', meaning that her height is equal to her length from rump to nose tip, and she's the same 'height' when she sits or stands. One of my neighbors has a dog that's got a curiously short body paired with very, very long legs. He's much shorter when he sits than when he's standing! I don't think that riddle is very inclusive of the general dog population. Maybe they came up with it with a specific hound in mind?

haha i don't really know, it's sort of an old riddle and i think it's probably meant in the general sense, which is actually wrong i guess, since it does differ between breed/body length etc.

I think dogs really tend to be taller when the are seated wit the buts tan when the are standing-standing for dogs means being on fours-sithhing means eing on the two fore legs-and obviously its head tends to be higher than where on th e fours

yeah you have a point about the head position when the dog is sitting as compared to when he is on all fours. thanks for the reply!

I agree with both posters. It depends on body type but also there head tends to be more up when they are sitting.

I have to agree with the comment that the head is typically more upright when dogs are sitting and can add a few more inches to a dogs height. Other than that though I think it depends on the breed. Some dogs are more square than others.
