Need Some Healthy New Ideas!

I have always been able to eat whatever I wanted and not gained weight. This has caused me to eat and cook and not really think about the unhealthy foods I put in my mouth day in and day out. My husband is wanting to lose weight for a grappling tournament that is coming up in October. He wants to do it the right way with diet and exercise. We have cut out all fast food and that was big because we used to eat out a lot! We have added salads with dark lettuce and spinach. Whole grain breads...I just can't get used to the noodles so I think we are going to have to stick with the not so healthy ones there. Brown rice, fresh and frozen veggies, fresh fruit, 100% virgin olive oil, lean meats... The problem is, I feel like we are eating the same thing every single day! I made chicken stir-fried with a touch of olive oil and veggies quite a bit. We have fish sometimes too. I need some healthy meal ideas (or even snacks!). High protein, low carbs and low sodium...but still tasty! What kinds of healthy foods does your family eat?

How about couscous - delicious and good for you. I suggest shopping at Trader Joes or Sunflower Market, low price alternatives to places like Whole Foods. They have all kinds of delicious whole grains and even supply recipes.

I noticed that Amy's items - veggie items are high in sodium too - there are some flavoured cous cous not high in salt but its rare. I too have to be careful, many processed foods have msg (sometimes masked under other names), and I get migraines. Its also not good for a healthy tummy. :) So you guys definitely aren't moving? We're hoping to be transferred to Pensecola soon!

Well, we definitely aren't moving right now. We actually had orders to Italy but then they were suddenly cancelled. My husband has the feeling it won't be too much longer and he will see another set come along. Pensacola huh? Are you wanting to go to Eglin then? My sister and her family just moved to Langley in VA. They were at Tyndall in Panama City.

Oh yes! I love couscous! I buy it plain and add my own spices and vegetables to it. I noticed that the flavored ones have a higher sodium content. I will have to look up those grocery stores and see if we have them here in Jersey. I know we have a Whole Foods. And sometimes you can find pretty good deals at Wegmans on organic stuff. Thanks!

Since you said that you don't have sweet foods anymore but are still overweight. Have you added any kind of exercise to your day? Even some brisk walking could help you.

Well, since I have been adjusting my eating habits and trying to get healthier and lose weight, I am the right person to talk to about this. I have taken out almost all of the carbs from my diet and I have lost 30 pounds in 4 months. It is very slow going now, only one pound a week, but it is the best way to lose because the chances are better for me that I won't gain it back. So I don't eat any bread at all, or potaotes or rice or noodles. I might eat a little bit of carbs some days but not very often. I hvae watched my sugar consumption by cutting back on coffee and tea and no more diet soda's because I have found out that sweetners are not good for us. I also drink tons and tons of water. I think that is the key to a healthy life style. You need to consume as much water as possibe. It helps to flush out the bad calories and toxins out of our body so it is easier to lose weight. Good luck to you and I hope you are successful with changing your eating habits.

Drinking the water is the difficult part for me. I hate water. My husband has been drinking a lot of water though. Especially during and after exercise. I don't need to lose any weight so I am not cutting out carbs. I am just making sure I consume healthier versions of what I used to; such as using brown rice instead of white. Completely cutting out carbs isn't healthy anyway, your body needs them. I really do need to force myself to drink more water though. You are right, it is essential.

I like your change of diet. Like you I never have to worry about my weight, but when my kids were born, I made it a point to give them balanced healthy diets, no fast food, no junk and not a lot of sugar. But you are adults, so I've done a search and the following is the best site I could find to get you started with simple varied menus. I hope it helps. http://eating.health.com/2008/02/22/healthy-menus/

Thanks for the research! I will definitely take a look! I know that I don't always eat the best but I try my best to offer my daughter (and big kids when I have them) a range of healthy foods. Lately her stubborn streak has come out though. She is two and just looks at her plate and hands it back. Then she points at the kitchen as if to tell me, "Go get me something better!" Other times she will pick up a piece of food, touch her tongue to it and then set it back on the plate before handing the plate back to me. My older kids always ask me, "Mom, why is Mimi SO cute?!" I tell them, "She has to be, because that is what keeps her out of trouble!"

I am going to try to keep offering to her. Unfortunately I know my husband will give in to his little princess and give her what she wants. One day he is going to learn the hard way...because she really does have him wrapped around her little finger! Do you know that her crib is still in a pile in the corner of her room because, "his baby girl is NOT going to sleep in a jail!" Hmmph. He is lucky I love him, that is all I have to say!

LOL. Been there had that happen. Went through a whole week of screaming and slaps to my thighs (the boys were very short at 2 and 3 yrs. lol) So I just kept saying, I don't run a restaurant. You eat what's put in front of you or you go without. Like I said, it took a week, but they never tried that again and now today, they eat healthy with hardly any nagging at all! LOL

moneyandgc hi lots of green salads with some protein in them is good, and barilla makes a yummy pasta that has whole grains and protein and omega three but tastes like ordinary pastas not that off flavor of some whole grain pastas. you will likethisonewith barilla past sauce on it and some meat in it Dont forget to eat plenty of fruits too like blueberrys, strawberrys and oranges and grapefruit and also pineapple and kiwis.all low in fat and sugar and full of antioxidants too. also lots of veggies and some whole grains like barley and bulgar wheat. I am a diabetic so have to watch what I eat too plus i do need to lose more weight and yet keep my blood glucose at a good level.

Thanks Hatley. I am going to look for the Barilla pasta you mentioned because I really don't like the flavor of the other whole grain ones. We like fruits a lot. I always add fresh fruit to my husband's protein shakes. I just heard that peaches are high in antioxidants too so I am going to pick some of those up as well.

Just avoid fast foods and add peas and veges to your meals. The peas and veges help digest the rest of the food and are essential healthy items. Fast foods only add weight and little nourishment anyway.

Thanks. We are doing our best to cut out the junk foods and fast foods because they are so unhealthy.
