Are there other ways you can do when you slice onions so that you will not hurt your eyes. I was told that you should put a slice of bread on the tip of the knife (but it falls of when I start to slice). There are also some who say you should chew gum (but I don't want to chew a gum early in the morning. Is there anyone who can share their experience in this situation. Thanks

Hi Muelitz, There are not many things you can do to stop crying when you are cutting oinons but I find when you dab cold water on your toes it helps so that is what I do and it does works for me and if you don't want to keep dabbing your toes with cold water you cand always stand in a bowl of cold water so try it and see for yourself. oh I have tried all the tricks but none of them worked for me, I used to make chutney and when my mother was alive she used to cut the onions up and she used to cut up a lot and it never affected her at all, maybe someone has new tricks...

I was told from my great grandmother that she held stick matches between her teeth when she sliced onions and she said that will help your eyes from burning. I dont no if it works cause I never tryed it.

I've read nice tips from the responses but in case there's power outtage at the time and you can't use the fridge, or the faucet is under maintenance, you can also get a basin and put some water and submerged the onion/s in halves for a few minutes before slicing it. My sister told me about it. I tried that and it worked.

Sorry, I have no idea why my fingers typed "d" after the word submerge. Obviously, it should not be there. That's the problem with me. I always forget to edit my typing before hitting "post comment".

Hi muelitz, I don't really know. I've heard about all the "no crying methods" but none of them have worked for me including the cold water one. So I wish someone would would give me a new one too. I heard if you don't cut the end off your eyes won't tear. None of that stuff works for me. I tear everytime. I love onioms but I hate to cut them. I never heard the bread one or the gum one. Hopefully this discussion will bring something new that we can try!

Immerse the onion in water and slice it there. Or wear goggles or glasses to prevent the eyes coming in contact with the "fumes" .

You hold the bread in your mouth, not on the knife. If you cut the onion cold (refrigerator cold) it helps.

Well the other one that I know that does work is to peeel the onion in a bowl of cold water,if the onion is immersed then the odor cant pervade the air.I like you hate peeling onions,I love to eat them, fried, roast or boiled lol but the peeling thing is not the good bit!but given that I like onions ,I dont like pickled onions!

I always put them in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes before cutting and voila! no tears! lol

I think after removing the extra skin of the onions, put them in water for a while. After five minutes you can again put them out of water and cut them. This helps in cutting onions without tears. I have tried it myself, so I know this works. Try it out and then you will know the difference.

the best method is to cut the onion into 2 halves and put it in the food processor with appropriate blades and there you go. onion is finely chopped, absolutely no tears! well i actually haven't tried this, one of my friends told me.

I just try to not breath in through my nose which can help.

Good question! As matter of fact that is my big problem too, whenever I slice onion all my emotion is coming through my eyes. But this is some ways that I do I left the water in the tap running, I've even told to chew gum, or put salt in the cup besides your chopping board......But none of these works with me i guess the best way is get somebody to do it for you...LOL

Onions is the most important ingredients in cooking. My brother was a chef in a restautarant he told to me that you can slice onions that wasn't hurt your eyes, soak it to the water before slicing, or put some salt besides the chopping board. In that way the you can lessen's the onions crying liquid. And till I know this secret I can chop 100 pcs of onions with out tears on my rosy face!

We often use a simple cutting device ingeniously made by perforating some little tin, the perforations leave some sharp edges which slice onions nicely when rubbed on it!

Then try this, soak them first in plain water. It will be easy to peel them and when you slice them you won't hurt your eyes. That is what i do when i make this liver sauce, where we put in a lot of thinly sliced onions. It works for garlic too, you soak them , and peeling them will be so easy and you won't feel this burning sensation in your fingers when slicing.

LOL,You may try to open your mouth and try to inhale when you slice unions so that you will not cry every time you doing it. I got this idea from soldiers who are assigned in the galley. We all knew that they are brave and dont want to cry in battle but unions make them cry thats why they discover it this way.

i really hate slicing onions before. whenever we prepare for an important gathering at home, i do the slicing of all the ingredients to be used. one day my late uncle, who's a cook, told me to put half a cup of salt at the side of the slicing board when slicing onions. it might not TOTALLY stop you from hurting your eyes but at least the salt minimizes it. i am married now and i still do the same practice in the kitchen. try it!
