Tottenham are ready to offer a British record £32 million for Valencia striker David Villa.
The Sun says big-spenders Spurs have splashed £40m in this transfer window and £97m since last summer.
But all of those deals will be dwarfed if manager Juande Ramos can convince Villa to sign.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is encouraged by recent comments from Villa's agent Jose Luis Tamargo and he is confident of snatching the star from under the noses of giants Real Madrid.
The Spurs supremo is prepared to make Villa Tottenham's top earner with a huge £100,000-a-week deal.
Tamargo said: "David likes London and likes how Spurs play under Ramos. If they present an offer, Valencia will seriously study the subject."
