How have you controlled or resisted yourself from having a vice whether it be drinking,smoking,gambling,drugs..... Is it
1. By always strongly believing that it is wrong to do so.
2. Learning from the experiences of others.
or having indulged yourself sometime and then having decided against ?
and even if you have a vice or a habit that you do indulge in once in a while, how are you making sure that you are not getting addicted ?

If you have a strong will power, it is easy to overcome..
When I was a student, my group of friends ( almost 15 ) use to gather at week ends and enjoy gambling and drinking.
I ,always avoided drinking....and never got addicted to gambling. In fact , one day some one challenged me , that now I cannot keep myself away from gambling...believe me , I never gambled from that day onwards

I have never been into vices that you have mentioned here. So, I would stick to vices like like cheating, lying, hypocrisy.....hope you don't mind me taking the liberty.
I think I am pretty much sensitive to my values and would not do anything that would hurt anyone in anyway. Having said this, I did tell lies a times but those were white and innocent ones for sure. I think our determination and strong sense of values and integrity gives us our character and this character directs us to th e right thing. Like I can never cheat even to the person who has always cheated me and used me like a door mat. That's the way I am and Alok that's the way my values have been.
Thanks.

By all means, Its good that you have taken the liberty of adding the other vices, as trivial as we may think they are in comparison to the ones I've mentioned.
The important thing here is to assess the basis on which we from our views on them. Your strong belief and following of your values is what has kept you far from them.
Thanks Mimpi, Your strenghts will take you a long way in life.

I would say the first two primarily. I desist from gripping into such vices at any cost. I know it is wrong, no one in family is in the habit of either drinking, smoking and gambling. I know how harmful and determinatal are these vices to our health. It can play havoc with our health. I have observed others who are in the grip of these vices, how do they and their families suffer because of these vices. I didn't try the third option mentioned by you...........LOL!

One word...Mom. When I was young just the thought of my Mom made me resist the enticement of vices. She just didn't scold me nor nag me. There were no threats of perishing in hell whatever. She just told me that she trusted me and not to destroy that trust. That was enough for me.
