Three friends went to a hotel and drew up a bill of $75/- Each contributed $25/- towards this and the waiter took the bill to the cashier. For some reason unknown, our dear friend the cashier decided to give them a discount and asked the waiter to return $5/-. Now the waiter was confused. He thought, “How to distribute $5 among 3 persons? ” So he kept $2 in his pocket & gave one dollar to each one of the 3 persons. That brings us to the mystery. Initially each one had contributed $25. And each received one dollar making their contribution $24. Thus, all contributed Rs 24 — that is 24×3=72 and 2 dollars in the waiters pocket. The total becomes 74. But they had paid $75. Where is the missing dollar?

They had paid $75 - $3 discount = $72 = $24 x 3. There is no missing dollar.

In other words: a paid 24 b paid 24 c paid 24 d took 2 the cash is 24+24+24-2 = 70 It's 72-2, not 72+2

$5 was taken out of the $75 making $70 which makes $23.33333 per person + the $1 = $24.333333 * 3 = $73 and $2 for the waiter

The waiter was one of the people paying the original bill. He ended up with $3 for himself which means he paid in $22 instead of $24 like the other two guys did. This one took me awhile.
