I need help promoting my website in a search engine.

I've created a website for my business and I'm trying to figure out how to get it indexed and listed on google and other search engines without having to pay out the butt to do it. I don't want to pay per click. I don't want ad words or anything like that. I've listed my website and contact information on all of the local business directories. I've added metatags and relevant keywords to the HTML on my site. I've gone to the various free search engine submission sites and had them submit my website to the various hundreds of search engines. Yet when I google myself (or use any other search engine) my site doesn't show up as its own entity. It only brings up the business directories that I'm listed on. So..what do I do? Bear in mind, I am not a webmaster. If you want to help me, don't get ridiculously technical because I won't have the foggiest idea what you're talking about. lol. Step-by-step directions would be handy. My site is small, only about 5 pages. I don't have a sitemap. So I can't use that to get indexed.(I understand that google uses sitemaps and such to spider). And yes, I know that these things take time. But I need to promote this business if I'm going to have any success, and part of that includes being easily found on the internet by my clients. Help! Any suggestions?
