Is a college degree more important than practical experience?

The company I work for places a lot of emphasis on whether or not a person has a college degree. I for one, do not. However, I have over 18 years of hands on experience in my particular field. On many occassions I have shown that I am more knowledgeable than my supervisor and others around me with degrees. However, those with degrees continue to look down on me and talk as if they are superior "knowledge" wise and overall as a human being because of their degree. What do you think?

I personally think that experience is more important, than a degree. But the buiness world doesn't think so. The company I worked for before I quit to be a stay at home mom put the policy in place that new hires must have a college degree. They ended up with a lot of stupid people who wasted the companies money left and right. Needless to say the company is now going under (because the owner relinquished his power over to one of these college degree holding idiots!! Oh well!!

I've experienced the same thing. My company has hired a lot of people with degrees that have been quite stupid. It seems they have only been smart enough to memorize the stuff long enough to pass the test to get the degree. Then all the knowledge went out the window. I'm hoping that one day the upper management will realize they've made a mistake before my company goes completely under.

Life itself is often the best teacher.
