i keep meaning to be prepared since my last power cut in the winter. and haven't done yet lol was a bad one, just served dinner and suddenly no electricity.. was about 7pm and pitch dark.. all i could grab was my mobile phone for light, but it was on only to bars of charge. Hunting for candles and all i had was birthday candles which lasted about a minute each haha.. laptop had 30 minutes charge so could listen to music and gave of some light until that died and im like noooooooooooo NOW WHAT.. ahhh touch.. so i mange to find touch but no batteries, they needed charging up with grrrr electricity.
All i could do in the end was go to bed early as it was better then sitting in the dark alone..
i do keep meaning to buy those nice candle holders with candles and have around house as armaments. not got around to it yet..
maybe i should use mylot earnings on investing in some.. what you think

I live in NW Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. Here in Pensacola, summer time brings severe thunderstorms and the occasional hurricane. We have to be prepared for the electricity to go out at any time. Usually it doesn't stay out for long, but after a hurricane, it can take weeks for the power company to get power restored to your area, so you have to know how to survive without it. Generators are a good thing.

well the hurricanes are the worst. They usually do a lot of damage. Trees and stuff go down and all that has to be cleared away to get the power lines out from under them before the power can be restored. Unless you have a generator big enough to run everything, you have no freezer or refrigerator, and no hot water. People with electric stoves have no way to cook unless they have gas cookers or a grill of some sort. Often, the water from the sink is not safe unless you boil it, and if the lines are damaged, you may not have water at all. Bottled water is good for cooking and drinking in these situations, but forget taking a shower (even a cold shower is better than nothing) or flushing the toilet. I grew up in South Georgia. Camping is something I have enjoyed all my life. I was a Boy Scout for several years, and we learned how to cook and survive without the luxuries that we take for granted every day. During the summer, we would go out on survival trips. Situations that could actually happen were simulated, and we had to survive until "rescue" or find our way to a certain point on a map. The trips usually lasted about 3-4 days. The thing was that we would only have with us what we would normally carry in our pockets or in a small survival kit in the car. No camping/cooking gear or food, basically a water bottle, a knife, some matches or a lighter, and maybe a small flashlight and some fishing line and hooks. Our objective was to find food and things to survive until we were either picked up or got to where we were supposed to be. We always had supervision, and the leader watched from a distance mostly, just to see how we handled things. It was actually kind of fun most of the times, but it got rough at times too. They didn't cancel the trips due to rain or other weather. We had to tough it out just as we would have had to if the situations were real. Anyway, all that being said, I know how to live without all the stuff that some people are dependent upon. I don't want to, but I know I can if I have to. So when we do get a storm, and the power is off for extended periods, I just think of it as an extended camping trip and use whatever we have available. I improvise on the rest.

omg...we here then don't realize just how easy we get it then.. We get a small tremor or real bad storm one time and everyone panics lol No electricity for only one night, and we go mad.. Suppose its what you get used to.
I didn't realise just how interesting this discussion was going to be until after reading all your responses.. thanks for sharing

wow... gosh.. i thought it bad to loose it all night on one day. and it maybe happened 2 times last year, apart from time to time power cut for half hour at the most. Seems like its just way of life for many and you just have to get on with it.

Ahh! We are accumstoned to power for over thirty years now right from our childhood days. Its no wonder they are now continuing even. It is as natural for the power to go anytime and come anytime in this part of the world. This is more so during summers. This time around even during rainy season the power is playing hide and seek with us. Only rich and thise in power would enjoy uninteruption. Those poor farmers are lucky to get power in terms of 2,3,4,5, 6, 7, 8(maximum) hours a day to raise their crops and produce food grains.
So, friend, that is how we are prepared to face power cuts over here..but don't ask HOW? because we are habituated to it. We do go for some measure to bear it but not exactly systematically and scientifically planned and that can be revealed.

wow.. well as child i remember we did get frequent power cuts.. but now, rarely it lasts for more then few minutes.. until the last one which lasted all night. So really, i was not prepared for it and i don't think to be as don't expect it to happen again until the next time lol I suppose we get it good here, and if hit by storm even.. it normally is sorted quite quickly..
for you, i suppose generator be good investment from mylot earnings

It is a good idea to be prepared. We have had some outages here lately with some bad storms that have hit us. We usually have a flashlight ready and some candles near by when the time comes.
