Yes, I used to say "Hello" when i pick up the phone first.. then followed by the other words, if they are known to me.."Hello" is the common word used by every one in the world, once they pick up the phone.. Somebody used to say that, some other religious saything prefix to the "hello".. Sometime, if you will received the call through your mobile, you can able to find that who is calling, if you know the person calling the other end, you can very well say that, "Yes tell me my friend".. like that.. What about you.. Do you also have a practice of saying "Hello" when you pick up the phone calls..?? Post your comments..

A friend of mine answers by saying, "speak"! I'm not the only one who wonders if she isn't talking to her dog! When I saw my husband's work number on caller ID, I didn't say hello. I said something to the effect that I wanted him to hurry home to .... A coworker had used his phne to call and ask me a question. Naturally, I was embarrassed, and everyone on the other end thought it was really funny!

Thanks for the "best." I thought of you and this discussion when I called a wrong number by mistake and the person on the other end answered by singing that old song about, "I'd Like To Get To Know You"!

Normally I used to say 'hello' as all do, but as you said when I know that the person who is calling is my Church Member than I say 'Praise the Lord'. In case of my friend I say Hi, Hi dear, or Hi sweetie etc.,

calls,mobile,incomingcalls - incoming calls,greeting people
In our landline as well as in my mobile i know who is calling me,the number will be specified in it.so usually i would pick like "Hi good evening, or morning sweety "( mostly girls call me )and i usually dont pick up any unknown numbers usually but when it is from landline i need to pick up the unknown calls too so i just pick up and say " GOOD eve/morning, who is online?"

I generally say hello but when I am busy I have been known to say "what?" or "yes?" out of impatience or I am just not focused and I forget to say hello. lol

Hi chennai, people in different places have their own styles to utter the first word when picking up the phone. From the movies and soap opera of Hong Kong and China they always say “wai” once they pick up the ringing phone. Like many people in the other parts of the world, people in my country, of course including me will say “hello” once we pick up the phone. I believe saying Hello has already become a common phrasal once we pick up a phone in my place. It doesn’t matter when we receiving a call or making a call. posting and have a nice day.

I usually answer with Hello, when I pick up the phone. I've heard some people say talk to me, or Yeah, when they answered the phone, that sounds wierd..lol.

I often replied with a quick "Hello" but if in the case of my mobile phone, whereby we can identify as to who was calling I usually answer differently to different people, like a friend say "What's up?", "Gelloww" or "Speak". To my other half, I would say "hi hon" . To people whom I don't know, I usually say "good morning, or evening" to them and followed with "may I know whom i am talking with?" but then again, saying hello has been a general rule.

I usually use "hello" when i pick up to phone. But there is another word to say hello, Like "wei" in chinese language. I usually use "wei" when i get a call from my best friend. I think the word "hello" is became a polite opening speach in telephoning. But if I have know the calling person, I not going to say "hello" or "wei" but directly to the main conversation like "What do you want" "Can I help you".

I do not say "hello" if the caller is known to me..in case of my friends, i used to say "speak". I say "hello" when i pick up the call from unknown or a partly known number as it is the most common way to answer a call.

Good day.. I usually say hello first because out of courtesy but when a prankster is having a good time with me then i'll be waiting for their first hello, if I didn't hear it within the first 3 seconds sorry they're going to hear a bang on the other end of their line.

I always say hello when I pick up the phone. If I don't know who it is I say "hello?" and If I know who it is I say "Hello". I say hello, but in a different tone of voice and sentence type.
