What keeps you awake at night?

Are you a worrier, noisy neighbours or just can't sleep? Many of us have difficulty sleeping occasionally. I used to have a very stressful job and would often find myself lying awake worrying about something which I could do nothing about, so I should have stayed asleep. What keeps you awake when you should be sleeping?

Gosh. You need to tell her that there is a time beyond which you cannot work. You get more work done when you feel awake anyway.

Sigh... Sleep is one thing I would dearly love to have enough of. I'm an insomniac and I just can't sleep (properly, for the lack of the right word) no matter how hard I try. I've done everything you can possibly think of. From drinking milk to exercise to sleeping pills. I don't know if I have an overactive brain or what... not to mention my already sleepless nights are at times compounded by noisy neighbors, the weather etc. Can I sigh once more?

There's nothing worse than you brain whirring and stopping you from sleeping. I've had noisy neighbours in the past. That's just awful and so inconsiderate.

The things that keep me awake at night are stressful situations that hae been UNRESOLED, and noisy neighbours from above, or when here is some kind of show in he building behind me. They tend to have loud concerts on Satuday night. Annoying as heck!! People ned to quit with the loud music after 11 PM.

Unresolved situations can keep you awake. Silly, because the middle of the night is the one time that you usually cannot do anything about them! Those concerts must be a pain. Unless you go to them!

I just have trouble sleeping most of the time I can't sleep. I sometimes have a few problems with neighbors, but not so much lately as we used to. Tho for New Years they were setting off fireworks (illegally I might add) until after 3 a.m.

I used to have insomnia since I was in my early teen years, and then now I have it again. Normally, what keeps me awake at night are my school works and the things I need to do on the internet. But recently, I just can't stop thinking about my boyfriend. That's what's keeping me awake these days.

Yes, good thoughts about him. I just really miss him because he's overseas right now, so I can't help but think about him every night until 3am.

If I can lay my head on a pillow, nothing can keep me awake apart from the kids! I've always wondered how it can be that I can sleep through parties and all sorts, yet one of the kids stirring can have me functional in moments. Actually, I did have a period a few months ago when I had difficulty sleeping. I could go to sleep no problem, but had real problems dropping back off again after the littlest woke me in the early hours. It was a period where I had lots going on in my life, but there was nothing that I could do personally to move things along as everything was in the hands of others. I guess that makes it a little like your wakefulness. I find being powerless to effect change the most stressful situation to be in.

Yes that's exactly how I feel about being powerless. My breakdown was brought on partly by the fact that I was powerless to affect the attitude that my new agency owners had towards me and some others. We were yesterdays men and we were not wanted. Hard to change that mindset.

Good morning Pike,well there isnt too much that keeps me from my slumbers,but I do have restless sleep..a sleep where I can wake and feel that I have done a twelve hour shift down Hickleton main colliery when the pit ponys werent on duty.But the restless sleep will generally come if im overtired,or thinking too much..I hear you say ..thinking too much?..lol..yes usually if one of the kids has a problem!
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Does Hickleton Main Colliery still exist Ruby? Must have been a hard life you had as a miner pulling those coal trucks! Funny how concerns about ourselves slowly become worries about our children. I know that my parents still worry about my sister and me - with good cause!

I'm certainly a worrier, and having a 21yo son at home doesn't help. If he was living elsewhere, I wouldn't know what time he got home, etc., and would have a bit of peace and quiet! One of my daughters is a bit of a daredevil and thrillseeker, but she lives away from home and now knows to tell me of her exploits when they are over, NOT before she does them! When I go to bed I listen to a radio, which is plugged into my earhole all night. I love the talkback and the quizzes - and the later the hour, the nuttier the callers get! It's tres amusing and VERY entertaining. I've never been a big sleeper, so the radio at least stops me worrying about my offspring!

My offspring worry me by coming home in the small hours, putting on every light, trashing the kitchen and making phone calls to people that they saw five minutes earlier! That wakes me and makes me very grumpy!

There is nothing worse than lying awake worrying. But late at night is not time when you can do anything about it.

I worry a lot. If I hear some bad news, if someone says that I am bad, if someone wants me to go somewhere I do not like (like a senior citizen;s home because he had a stroke and I do not want to go because I would have to spend twenty years after he is gone and cannot afford to buy a small house) or if someone on myLot calls me horrible names, then I will not sleep. I will run over my mind whether I should stay here, or how am I going to get my husband to get better, or I sometimes worry at why I did not get pregnant and what horrible thing I did. Now if all these thoughts happen at the same time, I will not get much sleep.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
8 Aug 08
Let me see. Good for you for not going to the Home. They strip away your dignity. I think that you are a sweet woman and I shan't call you names. Just love and support him. That's all that you can do. What has happened has happened and you cannot change it. So accept that it is futile to fret over it. You are a good person, not a bad one and you have the respect and affection of this old fish. Finally, sleep well.

Thank you. I do not want to be with a lot of over 60s, etc. who is just waiting for God. I want to do some traveling and I am not ready to die yet. I do suffer from low grade depression so when someone is nasty with me, and makes a long rant and says that I am wrong, that it really gets me down.

Hi p1, What keeps me up are the dogs barking, It scared me because I have a couple of cats outside, the rest of are inside. I'm scared that the cat will jump the gate and go on the street. So when I hear the dogs barking I'll get up and see what the dog are barking at. Ever since 3 dogs kill my cat I have not being able to sleep. It it's quite I can. If I heard cats fighting I'll run outside to see if there my cats. My family thinks I'm crazy, they make fun of me. As to how fast I get up. If there is a shooting, I can sleep through that. Other than that, i'm fine.

The dogs keep you awake but a shooting you can sleep through? Gosh Kalee where do you live? A barking dog can drive me to distraction though. Blooming things.

Hello pikefish, there are times when a herd of stampeding buffalo would not wake me, but often a cooling-motor from a fridge, or the sound of expanding or contracting pipes can wake me, if my sleeping routine is not good. This has been a problem in recent weeks as the humidity was making it difficult to sleep. This left me overtired, which made it even more difficult to sleep and I found myself in a vicious circle, where I was only getting to sleep three hours before I was about to wake up, as I virtully conked out from exhaustion. When I could not sleep I got up and did some work on the computer which only made it worse the next day. However, I am getting back to a good cycle of getting up early, getting out more and reducing my late-night computer activities, so my sleep has definitely improved. Regards Umart

Hi pikefish, well basically that is what I had to do - just take loads of naps 1 or 2 hour naps until I was getting enough sleep again. It wasn't REM sleep, but it was better than none at all. Have a good weekend. I have to get up early tomorrow for the swimming and the basketball. All the best. Umart

One should understand what is the root cause.Could this be the environment,unfinish job,no solution to your daily problem,money problem,old age or something which is keeping you awake.Next you should discuss this with someone,friends,family just like in here and list down all the possible solutions.Then proceed on how to prevent this from happening and possible long term solution.If all fails,I recommend practising "Gigong" which would likely give you a better control over your mind.
