First off the Dark Knight for me as a whole was a better movie than the 1989 batman movie with Nicholson in it as the Joker. The movie in 1989 for those who are too young was just called Batman and for me at the time was boring it seemed like for the first 45 minutes. The Dark Knight went straight to the action at the beginning which was great for me. The current Joker that Ledger plays is evil and twisted while the Joker Nicholson plays is more cocky and also evil but without being really twisted mentally. The current Joker really did grab my attention more when I watched the Dark Knight due to his dark personality and the way thought. This explains the cheap dirty cloths he wheres that looks like he has not changed in over a year. I believe Ledger played the part somewhat better but as a whole the movie is much better than the one with Nicholson in it. Its sad that Ledger passed away. I did not know him as an actor until this movie came out. I don't think the Dark Knight would have received the attention it did if it were not for Ledgers death.

Sometimes it seemed like Ledger was mimicing Nicholson's speech and expressions a little bit. It seems like Ledger's character had a bit more depth than Nicholson's to me. It led you to believe there were reasons for his warped personality and gave you a very slight sympathy for him.

Yes I understand what your talking how his dad mistreated him and his mom. I at least had some sympathy for the joker character.

My vote goes to Heath. His Joker seemed to have more depth. he seemed more like an everyday person that just snapped. I could not see Jack's joker as a possible real person.

re the idea of the joker being an "everyday person that just snapped" - does anyone know if Nolan or Ledger were influanced/inspired by Alan Moore/Brian Bolland's Batman graphic novel The Killing Joke?

I thought I heard of the novel in the past as I use to be really into comic books. I'm intrested in googling it.

I think Jack Nicholson portrays Joker better than the late Heath Ledger. His face is really cut out for the character.

Ledger is for sure. You are right the movie was better also. Aside from that ledger was better. It is a shame that he had to die. Thanks for reading and good luck.
