We live in a place where there are many wild animals ranging from coyotes to cougars, yes an occassional cougar. Well, two nights ago a coyote dug under our fence, came up to one of our young boer goats and killed him. The reason we had our fence installed by a company that puts up fence was to keep out wild animals. It had worked until two nights ago. Can anybody give me any suggestions on how to get rid of these pests, the coyotes, before they kill another goat?

If you have a fence, how did it get through? How high is the fence? Is it an electric fence? If not maybe you have one installed. Other than that I am not too familar with dealing with coyotes. Sorry I couldn't help you more.

Well, what happened was that the coyote dug under the fence. The fence is 5 feet high (10 gauge 4"x4" mesh squares) with two strands of barbed wire on top making it 6 feet high total. I thought of an electric fence, but that would be too expensive. Thanks for your concern and your response.

Hey i couldn't help it but there are cheap versions of electric fences. Cheaper than ammo for you weapons. Have you an old car battery, thats all we use to keep our bulls in. Try looking on-line for options. I will also look and get back to you. Good luck

I condsidered putting up an electrical fence as well AFTER I had our fence installed, but these ornery critters dug under the fence, so how high would the electrical wire have to be to stop them? Our fence is a 5' - 10 gauge 4 X 4 goat fence with two strands of barbed wire on top making it a total of 6'. I cost a pretty penny to have it installed, on approximately 10,000 linear feet. I will take your advice on your suggestion, though. Thanks

Do you know what a steal trap is? Get one of them & set it. But if you have any pets, make sure they are tied up or in a pin cause you dont want to catch them in it. We caught a fox, coyotes, bob cats & even caught a panther in one. Officaly, there are no panthers were I live but really there are alot. They use to kill my cousins pigs & other family members animals. About everyone around has seen them but the officals say they are not around there. When we killed one, the game warden said that it is illegal to kill them even though they "dont exist around here" Yeah, go figure.

Thanks for the best response! a few nights ago, something killed the woman who lives across the road from me's 2 goats & 2 turkeys. The turkeys weighed about 15 pds. each. One goat was a pregnant female. The other was a full grown billy. They found huge cat prints around the pond. The prints were as big as my hand! Huge! Then they found some tan color fur stick in the barbed wire fence. We followed the tracks down by the creek. Then we relised that there was 2 sets. A huge one & a smaller one. A mom & a baby. Kind of scared the hell outta me. I make sure my dogs are put up every night before dark now.

Yes I have heard and have a steel trap, but I really don't like to use them because of my dogs. You say you have panthers there? That must be really something. We have an occasional cougar or two around here, sometimes killing pet dogs in nearby houses, too. Isn't that typical about game wardens, saying it is illegal to kill these pests coming around and killing our pet!?! Thanks and you got my "BR"

I thought of the same thing you are suggesting and to tell you the truth, I could hardly sleep because I kept running through my mind how to rig up a booby trap to get that coyote, or whatever it was, to literally exterminate itself if it came back to finish eating the remains. What I am planning on doing is, once we get it, we will skin it and hang the skin inside our fence so other coyotes KNOW what will happen to them if they DARE come into our property. Thanks and I think we think the same. Thanks!

coyotes as pests - persistant wild coyotes are beautiful however they are a nuisance. In my area folks will show up with license in hand and ask permission if they can hunt this critters
It has been long said that you need to outthink the critters. Coyotes, fox, racoon, mink, wild dogs etc have been known to worry at a fence and dig. Your fence company when they installed the fence should have also buried a bit of fence so that even if a critter dug they would only hit more fence. Also your critter should be locked up tight at night. That helps protect against 2 legged critters from bothering your livestock. A good dog should do a good job. Good luck, it is an ongoing effort to protect those that you love.

We have three good dogs, African Ridgebacks. These dogs are ferocious with animals such as coyotes, racoons, etc. and Very friendly with kids and grown-ups as well. The bad thing about them is that we had another Little dog, a mutt you might say, that Taught them how to Kill goats. So now we cannot trust these dogs to guard the livestock for fear of them killing again. Thanks

I know this is a little late, I just signed up for this website, sorry. I was told that you can put bells on some of your goats and that will deter the coyotes. I was told that coyotes want a "silent kill" and won't come around (unless they are really, really hungry) if you put bells on your animals. I used to have a problem with coyotes in my area, Central Florida, and they would come up and kill my chickens. I put my dogs in pens closer to the chickens and I have not seen or heard them since. Fortuantely I have never had a problem with anything getting my goats. Best of luck to you.

I had heard of that too, but my neighbor also has some goats and sheep. He had several of them with bells and one of his goats (one that had a bell) got torn to pieces by several coyotes one night. Then, they came back the following night for the pieces they had left. Thanks
