Here where I live the school system is in an uproar. The school budget didn't pass not only once, but twice. We are now working on an austerity budget. Because of the fact that the budget didn't pass, significant changes were made. Over 100 staff members were laid off: Teachers, secretarial staff, and security. Also programs were taken away: Pre-K, Technical training courses, and sports.
The Sports program is one of the most difficult one to deal with for the simple fact that a lot of the young boys play sports. They see it as a way into college and our Basketball Team is one of the best High School Teams around and has been eversince the High School was erected back in the 60's. You will have a lot of boys walking around with nothing to do and you know what they say about an idle mind being the devil's playground. This is what Denzel did to help us:
MOUNT VERNON - Fundraising efforts for the schools' sports programs got a boost yesterday with the announcement that actor Denzel Washington would contribute $100,000 to the cause.
Washington's contribution matches the $100,000 that has already been raised by the community and brings the district closer to its goal of having $300,000 in donations by Sunday to pay for the fall sports season.
Denzel is from Mount Vernon...that's Mount Vernon, New York and this is not his first time contributing to a worthy cause here. Thank God for him and hopefully we will get the rest of the funds needed for the kids' sake.

That is always good to here of a celebrity designating some time and money to a worthy cause such as a sports program. I believe that having children active in something like sports is a good idea and healthy for them to not be on the streets where we as parents need to worry about them. An excellent cause on Washington's part indeed.
