Commercial TV or CDs and videos for your kids?

We have plenty of technology these days to offer our children a large variety of kids shows, movies, and educational videos without having to expose them to commercials. Our house doesn't have cable TV. We rent or borrow videos and CDs, or download them from the internet. You'd be amazed what you can borrow from your local library for example, and if they don't have it there are many places to rent for cheap as long as you're not stuck on the recently released videos.
We have found that, without exposure to commercial TV, our kids eat better and chhose to go outside and play more often. They still have access to many shows and video that are on CD or VHS, but without the commercials the effect is for them to look at these as an occasional treat.
How to you cope with your kids being exposed to consumer ads?

My 9 year old is a commercial recorder. She will tell you exactly where you need to go for new windows, carpet cleaning, a good dentist, an injury lawyer...and just about anything else...she beats the yellow pages!!
But I don't see this as a negative thing. Her brain is being stimulated and she's learning how to memorize things. We do our fair share of renting and borrowing dvds and watching educational programs as well.My kids all love the outdoors and are constantly asking for healthy snacks and wanting to know if what we are eating is good for us.
Sure they like to sit and veg out on occassion and they beg for candy and treats as well. But I think its a happy balance. I know this isn't possible for everyone, but it works for us.
