Many people are into music as a spare time activity, but how many people really make money from thier musical talents?

I play in function bands and pub duos so I guess it's fair to say I make money out of music. Also trying to make money out of my song writting, although that appears to be a little more difficult.

I play sax for a living. Function bands make more than pub/club bands simply because people booking a band for a party or event have a budget and don't expect anything back except a good performance. Clubs are in business and need to make money from you whether on the door or bar or both. I agree that it is harder to make money from writing but if it's your passion then it's worth figuring out a system where you can play/write for enjoyment and play for money. One thing I've noticed though is that some people would rather play music they hate and earn money, than have to do a job that doesnt involve music. I'm from the other group of people. I try to play in projects that will earn money eg a function band, but if I hate the music I just can't do it. Although after a while, a function band won't stretch me and I'll want to be doing something else really creative, i would rather do some menial work to supplement my income than sell my soul!

I play Keyboard and Organ for the Church, actually for God. I do it for Free and With all my Heart. That's a Great Blessing to Me. God Bless!

I've made a living with music since I was 19 years old. I've been a full time Minister of Music for 43 years and am on the verge of retirement. I'm still doing it part time though. It's been very good to me.
