Does it bug you or get on your nerves when you get called "maam" by people? I personally am 26 years old and it drives me crazy. To me, you are a "miss" until you get married and I'm not married yet so please call me "miss"!

I think it is perfectly fine if you are called maam. Whether you are married or not, maam does not make any difference. Instead if someone has called you mrs then you should react like this. otherwise it is fine if you are a miss and called maam. somehow I can not digest your question.

I am originally from Michigan and I've recently moved down to Florida and I've noticed a lot more. I think maybe it's the southern gentlemen part of the area? I work for a Sheriff's Office and I work the radio so I hear it a lot from the male officers. I agree, Mrs definitely says your married, but to me maam just seems old. I don't know why. *shrugs* Everyone is different though.

I think American people have called me 'maam' and it hasn't bothered me. I get called 'miss' in my home country and like that. I even get called 'madam' sometimes which I don't like as much. I have been called 'mate' in Australia and think that is really charming. When my mum can't think of someone's name she says 'doings' and that makes me laugh. I knew a Fraser and my mum called him Flavor and Favor.

I never had this experience before. People always call me "miss" when they address me. It will be very irritated for me if someone call me "madam" since I am not married yet. I will think that the person must be blind, lol.

LOL I agree sometimes I want to ask them do I look or sound old to you? Now that I've moved down South to Florida I have heard it a lot more often. I work for a Sheriff's Office as a dispatcher so I hear it all the time on the radio from the officers.

hi there my friend! how are you doing? well, i am most often addressed as ma'am or madam particularly in the workplace by some employees. this is probably so as a form of respect for my position and at the same time an appreciation for being a union officer who helps them when they just couldn't help themselves. be glad if you are being called as such!

I hate being called "maam" too. It makes you sound like your so old or something. I don't get called it often but I'm 20 and not married either so I much prefer to be called "miss."
