Liverpool's American owners are unwilling to match Aston Villa's £18 million asking price for midfielder Gareth Barry.
The Sun says the deal is now in doubt and owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett risked a serious rift with manager Rafa Benitez by suggesting his top summer target is not worth the money.
Benitez is fuming and severely embarrassed by the latest development.
The Spaniard has been trailing Barry since May.
