I had 64 kbps and then have moved on to 128, there is a big difference, I am now waiting until I can afford to upgrade to 256, which I hope will improve my internet experience even more.

If you are currently using a dial up then you won't find much difference in the speed of your dial up connection and a 64 kbps as the dial up is usually having a max speed of 56 kbps. But I would suggest you to go for a 128 kbps if that is the only other option available. the ideal speed for you would be 256 kbps connection. In case you are planning to download songs. movies and other big files from the internet it is advisable that you take the 256 kbps broadband connection at the least. I am currently using a 384 kbps speed Tata Indicom wired connection. And I must say you would only relish the advantage of having higher speed connections after using it. Now I can download a full dvd rip movie in one night. Thats amazing and I never thought it would be possible ever.
You are a student so I believe you have financial constraints. I would suggest you to go for any unlimited download unlimited time package so that you don't have to worry every time about your usage limit. In case you take fixed download limit or fixed time limit plans then you end up paying a lot more if you happen to cross the limits. Effectively for good connection without the tension of crossing the limit a 256 kbps unlimited download unlimited time broadband connection would be the ideal for you if you can put around 1K bucks a month.
