I am currently using Karspersky Antivirus. Kaspersky Anti-Virus for me is the best all-around antivirus program. It excels at its primary task of preventing viruses. Reviews agree that Kaspersky is better than the bestseller Norton AntiVirus 2008 in all aspects. Kaspersky is fast and light, it won't slow your computer as much as the bestsellers. Some of the users says that Kaspersky has more software conflicts and issues than the average antivirus program. Yet program users like me express a much higher level of satisfaction with Kaspersky antivirus software than with Norton or McAfee programs.

I have used quite a few antivirus softwares; I have used AVG,which is one of best you can get for free.Another good one for free that I have used is avast. I have had Norton. Which I didn't like at all. Did nothing but slow my computer down. Right now I'm using Threat fire; that just sits in the background and doesn't cause any problems to my computer. I have had more, but right now I just can't think of them.
You said you tried some free downloads;does that mean you don't have an antivirus at all?

I am currently using BitDefender and it seems to be doing a pretty good job. You can set many parameters such as automatic scans and it also seems to keep itself pretty up to date with the latest viruses. The best thing about it is that when it finds viruses or suspect files it alerts you that it has found them and that it has quarantined or deleted them and your computer has not been infected. I am happy with it.

I currently use AVG to detect my viruses daily, and then I use spybot to refind the problems and they then destroy them if AVG found anything suspicious with my daily virus scan. So that works pretty well for me, my computer is clean, and when I get a trojan or whatever, spybot does a good job of attacking them haha.

hiya, you could try AVG by the czech company Grisoft,it's downloadable.Or try Kaspersky, they have a 30 day free trial which would give you a chance too look around for more decent free software whilst keeping your computer protected.I use them and they have been great so far.
