Concern over Russia and Georgia

Russian tanks rolling in - Russia goes into Georgia
United States

If you don't know yet, you should know that Russia and Georgia are basically having all out war, Russia stepped foot into Georgia yesterday during the Olympic game hype. An estimated 1500 has died and the count is rising, mostly being innocent citizens. NATO and the US is trying to get Russia to stop, Georgia say that they will ceasefire if Russia steps back. I am worried about the entangling alliances in this mess; Georgia was joining NATO at the time, and the US trains Georgian troops, having our own troops in Georgia to do so, so the US is a close ally of Georgia. Georgia had to take at least 2000 of their troops out of Iraq in order to defend themselves. It makes me wonder if this can spark something a lot bigger and scarier. "Pentagon says the US would have gone into war with Russia if Georgia was a NATO member today." Bush also released a speech today showing his concern on the situation, and about the want for a ceasefire. What do you guys think of the matter? Will it escalate past Georgia and Russia, or will it end with just them involved??

I'm hoping that NATO and the UN can pressure these two countries to stop stop shooting at each other, but neither of them appear to be willing to back-down and continue to blame the other on the destruction of civilian targets. Georgia keeps shooting down Russian planes and Russian keeps rolling its armour into the disputed province. I doubt this will escalate, but I don't expect it to die down for a while. I find it disgusting that the Olympics and the John Edwards each have more news coverage than this.

I don't think it will escalate into bringing other countries into the fray, but I worry about the stability of the region and other countries with large secessionist populations. Kosovo very recently declared its independence from Serbia, and now this conflict in Georgia over a seceded province; it's very worrying.

I hope it ends with just them involved. We need to stop getting dragged into the business of other countries. To think, though, if it weren't for Russia not minding it's own business, none of this would be happening. I wonder if they were trying to aid the secessionists.

I am a touch worried about this. One of the reasons that Russia did this is because they consider NATO's influence in their region to be troubling. I believe that they are hoping to win back Georgia, and prevent it from joining NATO. Once again, we are reminded that WW3 could be only a stone throw away. I fear that it is going to escalate; I hope that I am wrong on that count.

I'm not going to be self centered but i think what Russia is doing is very right,i'm going to sight some examples and you can decide later if what they are doing is right or wrong. Assuming that you adpot a child legally with the knowledge of the two parents and the child is already under your care. After a while, the natural parents now came to forcefully take back that child ,not taking the right steps, nor passing through the right Autorities, how will that sound and how will you react to protect the child? Georgia started it all by attacking an Independent state (A country that they had granted Independence to)and Russia came to protect the helpless Country since they are now under them.If you follow the news ,you will notice that Gorgia attacked the Civilians and the poor while fighting, but Russia attacked their forces and their Militry base(s) to weaken their militry strenght, may be later they were forced to battle in the city as well and there were civilians casualties. For US to be supporting Goegia has more to it since they want to use Geogia as a base to monitor what Russia is doing,an idea which the Russians do not welcome.

Georgia never gave anyone independence. Separatists, militarily supported by Russia, took their de facto independence by force. In other words, they are not legally independent from Georgia or by any of the united nations. Since 1995, Georgia has been trying to reassert their authority over the secessionists.

Whatever the case might be,seperatist or Gorgia, why did Gorgia attack civilians,if they were after taking over power, should it be an attack on innocient civilians? Everybody are after their personal intrest. Americans can not support them just because they are not yet a member of NATO,they are already thinking of installing themselves and their known and unknown there so as to monitor Russia, they trained their Army anyway!PERSONAL INTREST,that's all.

I think that world war can begin anytime because countries are concerned more about fighting each other its shamful act.....infact to fight like this ....I m sorry to innocent people who r being killed and pray to GOD to do something for innocent people.... Ohhh my GOD r u sure US said so it would have fought Russia if Georgia would have been a NATO allie ....that means it can be a serious situation .....if US helps Georgia and in this US and RUssia start fighting it can grow to world war also..... Its very sad that all r fighting today......dont worry GOD will do something about it.... Thanku Ganesh

I don't think other countries will get involved with militaries. I am scared and worried for Georgians. I think Russians crossed the line when they began attacks outside of Ossetia. I hope that things don't get worse.

I was following the event on the TV. It is sad that this thing should happen. My sincere prayer is that the US would step in and negotiate a peaceful solution for both Russia and Georgia. May Georgia have peace and gain independance.

why must countries essentially go into countries to show them 'who is boss'? i find these tactics outragious! i dont think it will escalate into much unless the US steps in.

I really can't see this becomming a world war anymore than the chechnian issue or any other small regional conflict. Georgia is not a NATO member. I see a lot of speculative talk...."if Georgia was a member of NATO, the U.S.....yadda yadda yadda" They aren't so it's mute. I saw a person in this thread mention the "cowardly u.s. I didnt look to see where they are from. But for christ sakes world, don't go bringing our name in to this. We had nothing to do with Russia's actions or Georgia's. don't go blaming us again.

it is disconcerting but i have learned that there are so many things to worry about every day and i cannot add every thing to my list of worries. whatever will be will be and my worrying will not change the outcome. i would rather not waste my energy worrying and use it to be productive and positive.

I just wonder why everything leads to war. Are these nation not capable of settling this dispute in a peaceful manner. Many innocent civilians lives are at stake here. Their respective leaders should talk and negotiate in a peaceful manner. We have enough problems already in our hand. Nobody wants war. We need peace.
