I believe the Bible to be the Word of God and the constitution for his children to live by. It teaches us how to live and what's right an wrong, and how to grow into the person God intended for us to be. But like you said a lot has been lost in the translation, that's when we have to ask for the wisdom of the spirit to show us the right way. Lean not upon our own understanding.

Hi bookworms, I certainly don't accept it as a book of absolute truth, but there is much good in it, most of it in the four Gospels which contains all that we know of the teachings of Jesus. Most of The old testament is Jewish history with a lot of old stories thrown in with it that were handed down by word of mouth for centuries, and are usually classified as myth. There are some things in the old testament that are so terrible that it would be an insult to call it the word of God. It may have been the word of the God imagined by the people of that time, but certainly not of the God that Jesus spoke about. Most of the letters in the new testament are attributed to Paul, but Biblical scholars believe they were written by three separate individuals. This would certainly explain a lot, because anyone who reads them carefully can see that they weren't written by the same person. Paul, who first tried to destroy the teachings of Jesus from the outside, later became the greatest spokesman for Christianity, but his teachings were very different from those of Jesus, as many have realized down through the centuries. Many agree with Thomas Jefferson who said, "The world would be a better place if Paul had never been born". After one has studied the teachings of Jesus, it is not difficult to discern the false from the truth. Blessings.

I view it as a historical artifact that teaches Christians moral values and the like. As with all history- the recorders and writers can only be human and their writings were thus impacted by the society and culture at that point of time..so naturally there are some disparities that keep it from being absolute truth such as the different portrayal of God in the Old (harsh, strict etc) and New (benevolent) Testaments... This is not meant to criticize Christianity or the Bible in anyway- I still believe that the Bible is a very good tool for religious/social/moral education as with all holy books such as the Quran, the Buddhist Scriptures and the like.

I don't believe the Bible is absolute fact for the simple reason it was written by man and man makes mistakes. I do how ever believe there is enough pure truth in it to get us where we need to go. I mostly concentrate on the first 5 books of the New Testament. I do my best to live by the words of Jesus and I believe at least a lot of what he actually spoke has come through to this point in time. Luke was a Doctor and I believe he would have kept notes of what Jesus said. The book of Luke seems to be a little more complete than Matthew and Mark. This could have been part of God's over all plan so people wouldn't be able to understand much of the Bible without His help.

2 Tim 3:16 says 'all Scripture is God-breathe and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness'. I take the line to refer to issues of 'faith and conduct'. The line does not say that it is useful for Biology, Mathematics, Astronomy, Economics etc. So I would say good attitude is there, but it also extends to issues of faith and conduct or rather doctrine and ethics. Blessings!

To me, the Bible is absolute truth. God is perfect, and the Bible was written by God (who used men to actually write it).
