My husband is away and I can't get a hold of him. We have been having rain off and on for days here and the grass is really long. It needs mowing badly. We have a gas mower. I just checked outside. The sun has been shining all morning and the grass is still a little damp. Is it okay to mow the lawn while it is still damp? I am afraid it is going to rain again so I want to get this done before it happens. I know when I was younger, living at home, we couldn't mow the lawn when it was wet but we had an electric mower. Is it okay to mow the lawn while it is still damp? It is clouding over again... we have GOT to get the lawn mowed!

I will proibably get blasted for saying this. NO it doesn't hurt to cut it wet. My Dad swears it will kill the grass. My neighbor across the street never cuts his unless it is raining & his yard looks as good as mine. He ALWAYS waits until it starts raining to begin cutting it. I've cut mine when its still damp in the morning because it is cooler then & I've NOT killed it yet. The grass just cakes up under the mower just a lil more.

He mows WHILE it is raining? That's a new one. It has clouded over here now so I sent my daughter out to do the front lawn before it starts raining again. I'm not sure if she can do the backyard (DH never let her - she's 12) so I'll have to get out there myself if the rain holds off. Thanks for responding.

Hi patgalca. I learned from my dad many years ago (he used to repair lawn mowers) that it could damage a lawn mower if you mow when the lawn is damp. This is because the clippings get up into the housing (the covering) of the lawn mower's motor and can get caught in places in the engine and cause alot of engine problems. When the clippings are dry, they just "fly out". But, when they are wet, they are sticky and may get stuck in places where they don't belong. I know it's difficult to wait for the lawn to dry out (I live in Florida!), but it is recommended, or it used to be. Our lawn mower brochure also stresses not to mow when it's damp or wet. However, I don't know hardly anything about a riding lawn mower. I'm not sure whether the above applies to riding lawn mowers or not. Good luck with your mowing.

Thanks for that bit of information. I am sure that will be helpful to others. My daughter did mow the lawn, and it did rain shortly thereafter so I am glad she got it done. I had run my fingers through the blades and it was barely damp, but not dry. I don't think she did any damage; at least I hope not.

its a little late now - but the reason you don't mow wet grass - well one of the reasons - is that it gets caked up in the mower - also it will cause fungus to grow when the clippings are clumped on the grass - but.... mine needs mowing - but you can't tell between rains - its all laying flat anyway

As LadyMarissa stated, the cuttings will clog up under the mower if the grass is wet, but as long as you stop every now and then to scrape it out, it shouldn't harm the mower. It certainly won't harm the grass. If the grass is very tall, you might want to adjust the wheels on the mower so that it cuts higher.

I don't think we need to raise the wheels because the sun is not out to burn the lawn. It looks like it is going to rain yet again! DD doesn't seem to be having any trouble with clogging (which I knew could happen). The lawn was only a little damp. She is almost done both the front and back now! What a great kid!

I wasn't thinking about the sun burning the lawn, just that when it gets too long, it clogs more.

You can mow the lawn when it is wet but you will need to go slow otherwise the grass will get all clumped up under the mower and it won't cut then. You can stop and clean it out every so often too.

I don't think its actually recommended because grass can get caught more easily around the blades and stuff, and it will clump more. But I see people here mow when the grass is wet alot. Sometimes if it's just going to keep raining every day you just have to find the best time and go for it I reckon.

I was told the same thing by my dad too. I'm not sure if you can use a gas mower but I'm sure someone out here will be able to help you.

Yes, you can mow it while it's slightly damp but you'll have to go slow and if it's too damp you'll have to stop off and on and scrap the wet grass out from under it. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**
