Don't SCARE Me Like That!

Does your computer ever scare you? Mine does! I am usually all over the place, multi-tasking with several tabs open at a time, doing a variety of things while I'm sitting here at my desk. Because of that, I usually leave my speakers on 'mute', so that I'm not disturbed when someone has music on their page, or someone is telling me all about their fabulous money making site, or whatever. Every so often I'll have to turn the speakers on for something that I really do need to listen to, and I'll adjust the volume 'just so' for whatever it is I'm doing. I'll be diddy-bopping along and all of a sudden WHAM! Someone's music is blaring or they are yelling at me through my computer speakers, because I forgot to set it back to 'mute'! Does this happen to you? Do you leave your speakers on all the time or do you mute them?

Hi,well I will usually turn the volume off,and keep the sound muted, because it is easier if my partner is watching anything on the television. But there are times when I am alone that I really like to have thew sound on,but lol you say it makes you feel jumpy and that is a true fact, the sounds of the messenger makes me jump, lol

sometimes i get confused when i hear something on the computer, and i think it is in real life, then i realize it is only the computer. like when someone on my messenger list comes online, there is a knocking sound, and i think there is someone at my door. or when someone on messenger calls me, i reach for my real phone, and then realize it is the internet.

I also keep my computers on mute and for exactly the same reasons as you.

I always mute my speakers. I can't stand the noise. Even the opening and closing sounds it makes when people on AOL leave annoy me. I get scared sometimes too when my husband will forget to mute it back after using the comp.

What browser are you using? Sounds like you have popups that are giving you heart attacks. Because people have learned to ignore quiet vids and pictures, they have started to 'yell' through people's headphones and speakers. Yapping is harder to tune out, especially if they cut into music. * Firefox can control most popups so they don't 'yell' at you while your minding your own bisiwacks.

I leave mine on because I'm usually listening to music. Aren't those sales pitches annoying?! Especially the one that yells "Your bank account will EXPLODE!!!!" More like HIS will if you fall for his pitch!

Hi Ldyjarhead - I mute my speakers a lot because I don't like being scared and blarred at by loud music on other's pages either. I usually just turn them on if I am going to listen to something in particular that interests me. But, of course, I share my computer with my husband & my 13 year old son so frequently the speakers get turned back on and scare the pants off of me when I am least expecting it. That is definitely not a fun experience as you well know. I also forget to mute them myself sometimes too, of course. I don't have the best memory in the world! LoL

I almost always have my speakers turned off. A weird noise comes out of them that is very irritating, especially when a cell phone is nearby. Sometimes they do it even when there is no cell phone around. I don't know what causes it, but it's loud and irritating. It doesn't do it for long, but you just never know when it will.

I hardly ever have my speakers on, which is a bad habit. I miss a lot of instant messages, and there are times I'm waiting for someone and miss them because I had the volume turned off.

Hi Deborah! I almost missed your msg earlier, but only because I was out of the room. Good to 'see' you!

My computer scared me the other day because I thought it was making a stange beeping noise. I had my husband check it, and he investigated all the error noises and couldn't find what was causing it. I eventually realised it was my mobile phone, which had been left on the desk and was running out of charge ... I had no idea the damn thing was capable of making a noise - go figure! (My husband was a bit cross that I'd wasted his time!)

I use headphones because I am on the computer at the same time that my mom is listening to the news, and she has a hard time hearing. I am also going to be taking online classes on the 20th of this month, and part of that is a seminar once a week. I will use the headphones then because I can concentrate on what the professor is saying more without all of the outside distractions with using speakers.

Yep. I do that all the time. Or I have it turned so I can barely hear it and keep wondering who's out in my yard talking! I also have a program that has an hourly and half hourly chime. Sometimes I turn the speakers up to listen to a video or audio program and forget it. Then I'm in another part of the house and hear the chime and wonder what it is!

This happens to me a lot. I usually have my speakers turned down, but once in awhile, something comes blaring out of them, scaring the stuff out of me. My husband and my daughter sometimes use my computer. My husband talks to someone on line, so, he turns the speaker up so he can hear him when they are actually talking. My daughter listens to music while she checks her bank account and her myspace messages. Needless to say, neither of them EVER turn the speakers back down when they are finished. Not a good thing for an old woman. I keep trying to tell them that but...... Hmmm, ya think they are doing it on purpose? *L*
