It is the start or end of an emoticon (smiley face).
You don't normally see the 'em' in a discussion here, but I think they show up that way in your email and in PMs for some reason.

(em) is the HTML opening tag for an emoticon.....like a smiley face.
so somebody put an emoticon in their discussion, but for some reason it doesn't show up, so you just see the code...(em) and (/em)
