When did you first log on and how was it for you?

I can clearly remember the day I first got internet on dial up connection. I was 29 so 7 years ago. This I can remember as I used 29 in one of my first ever user names. I had ordered it all through Telewest and had problems setting it all up. I had to phone up their help desk a few times and then bingo! I was up and running. Or should I say crawling. I very tentatively starting surfing and after about 10 minutes I started to panic. What if I was being charged for the sites I was visiting? I really didn't have a clue! :) I then called up my Dad and asked him. I tried to feel more confident when he told me that I paid monthly and that was it and unless I was asked to submit my details I wouldn't be charged any more. It took the rest of the day for me to feel comfortable and by the next day I was well away. Funnily enough it didn't take me too long to get onto broadband and become an internet addict. When was the first time for you and how was it?

It was about ten years ago. I didn't have a computer but I bought a Sega Dreamcast, which was the first games console to connect to the internet through a TV. I never wanted to play games, only to surf the net and use it for emailing - I bought a special keyboard to go with it. It was really great to see websites appearing on my TV screen. Back then there was only dial-up, so I had to limit how long I spent online, as it was charged at the same rate as a local phone call. When I did get my first desktop computer I was able to connect and logon to the internet and found I could do more things online. When the first unlimited internet deals appeared I was so happy. I couldn't afford 24 hour unlimited so I subscribed to unlimited surfing in the evenings and at weekends, with a small additional charge for daytime use. It was still dial-up and very v e r y s l o w. Now, since the start of this year, I have 24 hour broadband. I was just as excited using broadband for the first time as when I first logged on to the internet.

Wow a dreamcast.. now that brings back memories. You made me remember too with your post how I got my first email, through the cable tv, before I got my internet, and it meant using an on screen keyboard, as I was to tight to pay out for a proper one to attach. I was so excited about it, until I realised that hardly anyone I knew had email, so I had no-one to send them to. As for the packages, we were the same as you. Started on the dial up, pay as you go, but after the first bill I thought we were better off with the free evenings and weekends one. As soon as I could get broadband though I did and I was well away.

I worked with this shipping company and they put a computer on my desk and said to use it. I asked everyone a lot of questions and now, years later, I still only know what to do what I actually do. Its a very interesting and infectious thing and well worth it no matter how you enjoy it.

I find out new things to do on my pc daily, and am always learning. That is probably the best way to learn, by getting thrown in at the deep end, and trial and error. At least it didn't out you off pc's or you wouldn't be here in mylot now
