do people really find things? i could imagine buying one and using it for years and finding like 1 thing and it being junk and well im too cheap to risk that haha.. are there certain areas that would be better to look around with one? does the price and more high tech of the detector mean anything?

I think metal detectors are for total creeps. Unless of course you know where to look. I think one of the best places would be beaches and popular areas where people go to. Local parks and stuff. But only when there are no people around. So maybe in the fall and in the winter... But my friend's grandpa, after retirement, took this up and he said that he found some pretty cool things. Actually most of them being coins, spoons, and forks. But they were really old and he sold them to some sort of collector's shop. He's from Seattle. And he makes money that way, I don't know how good the income is though...

Hi there moonlitmagikchild Where I come from it is mainly retired men that use metal detecors on the beach. It is just a hobby to them really, something for them to do and it keeps them off the streets and out of trouble!!

I know OF (I don't know personally but I know stories) people who have found things, and I know of people who have found nothing. I know a friend with a metal detector, and we just found crap, but still it was fun to look. I think they ae more a hobby thing than a career thing. If a hobbyest finds something, wonderful, if not the hobbiest won't be upset.

I'd like to have one and would definitely recommend the best one you can afford. I don't think it would be much different than fishing. Sometimes you catch something good. Other times you don't catch anything. Most of the coins you will find are pitted and corroded so they do not have a collectible value. However the metal can be sold as scrap. It can also be used to find property markers.

However a copper or silver spoon or fork would be a good find.
