I getting married. How to get a "loving wife"?

I am not married yet and look forward to getting married shortly. Many started advising me on how to select the partner, how to handle things after marriage, so on and so forth. Is it by luck that you get a good wife or you convert them to lead a good life or how is it being done? I had the opinion that marriages are made in heaven and we have less control over that. So its all upto fate to give us a good life. But i now think that need not be the case atleast in some cases. Your experiences & views will be of use to me. Kindly share them.
