Earlier today I was at my aunt's house. And my cousin mentioned a way to get rid of hiccups that I had never heard of. She said to hold a pencil horizonally in your mouth while drinking at least 8 oz. of water. Has anybody every heard of this method? If so, does it really work? Or what method do you use that seems to work pretty well?

Iám not aware of the pencil method, but i try to hold my breath for few seconds whenever I get hiccups, if it is a very strong one then I drink atleast 2 glasses of water at a go, as we get hiccups if our body sometimes needs water. it would go after 15 - 20 minutes. I have heard people drinking water with few spoons of lemon juice, personally I have not done that. i don't have time to do all those preparations when hiccups are there. just drinking plain water has worked out for me.

I personally hold my breath to get rid of them. It usually works. If it doesn't then I go to the water. The less complicated the better.

I have two different methods that work for me. A spoonful of peanut butter works better and faster. The other is to just drink water, as much as you can, without taking a breath.

Wow. An hour is a long time to wait to get rid of them. I don't think I could stand them that long or even stand my hand being up for that long. lol.

i have heard of three ways but i don't know how it works because i seldom hiccup. the first way is to drink as much water as you can without break. the second way is to hold your breath as long as possible. the third one is to get someone to give you a sudden fright then you can get rid of your hiccups.

A few methods and techniques I did to get rid of hiccups or should I say to cure hiccups: 1. A glass of water helps 2. Holding breath for some time or sitting quitely also helps in getting rid of it 3. Breath in holding a paper bad on mouth and nose. 4. Ash or peacock feather is best remedy for hiccups. 5. Cardamom with honey also helps in getting rid of hiccups. 6. If the period of hiccups is prolonged, I will consult a doctor about it. Hope it helps.

Hiccup (singultus) is the condition that happens when there's a sudden rush of air into the lungs causing the epiglottis to close, creating the 'hic' sound. Normally, hiccups just go away as your normalize the breathing after some time. But just the same, people tries so many 'tricks' to relief the discomfort at once. And yes, I have heard about that Pencil Method in curing for hiccups. Some might find it ridiculous but true. The pencil will hold air coming in to your mouth and the water just pushes it to let the epiglottis open again for normal breathing. So many age-old ways our old folks have practiced to conquer hiccups, some are even strange but somehow works to some. A pencil or pen or chopsticks or anything of the same size you can insert to your mouth horizontally can do for this. Just beware, you might look ridiculous doing this on some crowded places...hahaha. Do it alone okay and be careful not to swallow the pencil! As for me, I just swallowed my saliva and drink water. But in any other case and if symptoms persists, always consult your doctor. Right?:-D
