I recently read that we are supposed to drink 3 full glasses of water before bed. Anyone else of heard of this? I know that water is good for us and that it flushes away fat and cleans out blood. But why before bed.. I would be running all night.. I think that it would work all through the day better then just at night.. So what is your take on this?

I try and drink 2 litres a day, and always carry a water bottle with me so I am more inclined to have little sips of water more often and the 2 litres just tends to happen throughout the day. When I do drink lots of water before bed, I tend to wake up during the night for bathroom visits. If you had the water enough time before bed and can go to the bathroom first it might be alright. I always take a glass of water to bed to sip on it if I wake up dehydrated in the night and to drink first thing in the morning.

I don't think it would be a good idea for me to drink all that water before bed. I'd be up all night going potty. Then I'd have to deal with the lack of sleep and all of the problems that can bring. I try to drink my half a gallon a day maybe more but at bedtime it's a small cup of sleepy time tea for me.

Your cats sound like ours. Tony ( m ) like to go after my husband coffee every morning.. And Gizmo ( f ) likes to go after the sleepy time.

I have not heard about this, in fact i have heard the other way round which sounds more logical. We should drink 3-4 glasses of water early in the morning as soon as we wake up before going to the washroom. This helps to flush out the undigested waste matter and cleanse our body.......Have a nice day.

There must be some reason. But three glasses before bed is too much for me. Id say dont wait till you get thirsty. Drink ofter. But dont over do it. It might cause in convenience! I was reading the paper the other day and I read that drinking too much water can cause certain toxins in your body to be released and thats not good. Not sure if its true.

I also drink more water during the late afternoon and evenings. I don't know why but I have a theory that I get thirsty after eating and the foods that make me thirstier are eaten later in the day. I would never get any sleep if I drank that much water right before bedtime, but I drink plenty of water all through the day and because I sleep with my mouth open and am a mouth breather, I drink water during my sleep time if my mouth gets dry. I have a fan on all night long so that tends to dry my mouth.

I'm trying not to drink anything at least one hour before bed. I don't want to have to get up in the middle of the night to visit 'the little girl's room'. : ) I drink about 10 glasses of water a day. I know I function better, and I feel good knowing I'm doing at least one thing right for my body. The only reason I personally would drink three glasses of water before bed, would be to make sure I felt full, and didn't get the munchies in the middle of the night.

I don't drink them all at once, lol. Eight glasses is the minimum we are supposed to get, and I drink a little more than that.

I keep a bottle of water by my bedside at night so that when I wake up with my mouth full of cat hair I can wash it down, hehehe. But I actually heard the 3 glass bit the other way around. I read that it is a good practice to get into drinking 3 glasses of water before breakfast. Personally, I don't like to follow a bunch of rules in my life... it takes all the spontaneity and fun out of it for me. Plus it makes it harder to listen to the needs of my own body. I am trying to drink more water because my body has let me know that it needs it. And since my thirst mechanism has been ignored for so long it no longer functions as it should and I cannot rely on it right now, I do try to drink those 3 glasses of water before breakfast. But I don't eat breakfast until I've been up for a few hours so that works well for me. That way even if I go the rest of the day and only drink caffeinated tea loaded with cream and sugar, at least I will have got those 3 glasses down!

Hahahahahahahaha! Well, I've heard it now! And I prefer what I've just heard from you on the subject to what I heard elsewhere! Which was that drinking a caffeinated beverage counted as -2! Therefore if I managed to get 3 glasses of water and one cup of tea down me it was the same as only drinking 1 glass of water... yeah, I like your version much better!! It makes much more sense!

Your the second person that says that have heard to do this the other way around!! I have heard that we can claim 1/3 of caffienated drinks as part of our water intake. Have you heard this as well?

Funny that you should start this discussion actually because I have been experimenting along the lines of this. I know that I should drink more water, but I am not a water lover, so what I decided to try was to drink a cupful of water before I went to bed each night. I have been doing this for about a week and what I have noticed is that I have less lines on my face, my skin is more flushed and healthier looking and not so pale and dry. I also notice that I go to the toilet regularly, which is always a good thing!! So it is good to drink water before going to bed, although I do agree with you that three cupfuls would be a bit too much in terms of wanting to go all night. But then going to the toilet does flush us out too.

i read somewhere not 3 but at least one glass before going to bed. it is because while we are sleeping we are still releasing liquid in our body...to replace those liquids we release while sleeping so not to dehydrate...

Hello, When you are asleep, your body actually release hormones which help to retain water in your body while you are asleep. In case you are curious, the name of the hormone is ADH (Antidiuretic Hormone). It promote water retention in your bladder - where your urine is stored. Thus, it is not really necessary to drink a glasses of water just before you head for your bed. This is why the first pee in the morning is usually thick and yellowish, this is the work of ADH.

Hello, Drinking beyond the point of thirst will do. Another interesting way to see if we need more water is by the color of the urine. If it is pale white, then it means you are well hydrated. Pale yellow to thickish yellow means you need to consume more water, just slightly more water will do. If your urine is greenish yellow to green color, it means you are seriously dehydrated - drink more water immediately.

I'm with you. I drink nothing before bed and I'm up at least once during the night. If I drank 3 glasses of water I would get almost no sleep. During the day, OK, but not at bedtime, wouldn't work for me and my pea sized bladder!

Hello, It is not good to drink too much water in one good, such as 3 glasses of water within 10 minutes. Most of it will be turned into urine without being absorbed by the body. The body will absorb the water slowly, so spread the 3 glasses of water over a period of 1 hour instead of drinking everything in one shot. You will just be wasting water. For your information, drinking too much water in one go can cause water intoxications, which can be deadly as it disrupts the ions balance in your body, such as Sodium and Potassium, which are all needed for the body to work properly.

It is quite impossible to have that much water before go to bed. It will be a painful experience all over the night, especially in winter. I don't know if it come from a true scientist. I believe half a glass of water is enough. You can have more when you get up in the morning.

If you drink a glass of water before you have a meal you will not eat so much so it is good if you are on a diet. I drink lots of water and green tea during the day but it would not be good drinking a lot at night.

Try not to drink too much tea before bed-time as most tea contain caffeine, which will make you harder to fall asleep. In addition, most tea can stain your teeth, causing yellow teeth. Just for your information, tea contain a natural chemical substance which can affect your digestive system in getting the nutrients in your food (the chemical substance forms a thin layer of 'wall' on your small intestine, so stuff like proteins and vitamins absorption can be affected). This is why some of the tea claim to have slimming effect, it just block the amount of 'energy' your body can get from your meal.
