it's funny how depression can so change your thoughts and actions. For several days things weren't too good, thoughts, memories etc. Haven't hit this level in a couple years, for some reason the thought of cutting myself again wouldn't go away, finally i gave in and cut my arm several times almost from elbow to wrist, but afterwards i started feeling better. why is it that doing something like that to yourself often helps to make you feel better afterwards?

There is something I have always wondered about cutting. It seems to be a fairly new phenomenon. I am 20 years older than you and I don't know of it ever happening when I was a kid. Maybe it did I don't know but it wasn't like it is today. Do you think that it may have something to do with self punishment? I ask because of the changing attitudes in the last 20-25 years about raising kids and spanking. Parents today seem a lot more reluctant to spank or even punish their kids in any kind of a harsh way. It is considered that if you spank your kids it is promoting violence. But I am of the mind that kids really feel more secure with firm boundaries. Not abusive of course, but now it seems that maybe kids who were not shown those boundaries(but know that they should be there) are taking it out on themselves. I don't know, It's just a question I have had whenever I read or hear an account of young people injuring themselves and saying that it makes them feel better. Maybe in a broken sort of way they see it as a kid of my generation would see a spanking. Painful, but a sign of security and caring at the same time. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Oh my goodness! Have you talked with your doctor about this? Isn't there someone you can call when you get to feeling that bad? I'm sorry it's got to this point again. I have no experience with this so don't have any advice.

yeah they do have crisis lines or crisis councelors at the hospital, but it has never seemed to do much good in this situation,

I'm so sorry. I'm going to have to look this subject up and see what I can find out. I've heard of people cutting themselves but I don't really understand why. Are you ok?

yeah, i understand why, it's extremely hard to put into words though and everyone does it for different reasons, i just don't understand why the thought even enters the mind, or how it can be followed through without feeling it, i tried taking a knife to myself once on a normal day, and as soon as it started cutting i stopped, hurt like hell.
