Toxoplasmosis is a parasite of some sort that is passed to humans through cat feces - you cannot get it by simply touching your cat. You CAN theoretically get it from changing their litter, but if you've had cats for quite some time you've already developed a resistance to it. If you are infected, you'll feel a bit like you have the flu - after which you'll be fine and will be resistant to it, unless your immune system is compromised. It is especially dangerous for pregnant women to be exposed to it. However, your exposure will be severely limited if you always wash your hands thoroughly after changing the litter, as you have to ingest the parasite. Basically, you have nothing to worry about from merely touching your cat.

This is only a problem if you are pregnant. If you are, then have your husband change the litter or wear gloves. Both my daughters had cats while they were pregnant and were absolutely fine. They petted their cats, too. Please don't worry about touching your cat. It is very good for you to pet your cat; it will lower your blood pressure.

No, you can't get it by just touching your cat. If you are pregnant and handling the litter box, then you have a danger to your unborn child. Its the feces that are the transmitter, and it isn't much of a danger to a healthy adult, it can cause birth defects in the unborn.
