Mount Mayon, the volcano famous for its near perfect cone shabe in the Bicol region,Philippines is spewing smoke once again. Mt Mayon is one of the Philippines' nominees in the new 7 wonders. reading about it brought back memoreis.
Have you ever been to a volcano?
Have you ever experience to be near an errupting volcano?
I have.
Because of my husbands work, we moved a lot. In 1991, His office brought us to Central Luzon,Philippines. I was pregnant then and was due to give birth with our 1st child on June 29,1991.
Central Luzon houses Mt Pinatubo. A volcano dormant for thousand of years. Pinatubo means-to have grown.
On the morning of June 15,1991.As I saw my husband off to work, there was this huge smoke mushrooming in the sky. I asked him not to leave anymore as I was scared. The volcano showed signs of life for only a couple of monthit wasnt expected to errupt that fast, based on the experiences with Mt Mayon and our Taal volcano which is a volcano within a volcano.
My husband had to work,we both we knew it.so he left around 6am.By 11am,I heard hard objects falling on the roof. They were stones...strong earthquakes followed together with loud explosions, with fire booming up high. It was scary. I ran to our neighbor for refuge. Good the husband who works in the middle east was home at that time.At 1pm,it was midnight dark. Shelves, trees, posts were falling. We were lucky,we were farther off, lava will be slow and far. But the ash were causing everything to fall.no electricity.no water.and no husband.
meanwhile,my husband who left by bus, was in Manila.By 1pm, he learned about everything.Unfortunately, no bus would brave the 2 hour trip.cars' front shields will be smashed by the ash.good,he met this van driver who was very eager to go home to his family.they travelled on the highway with fallen posts.but they could only travel so so.they had to walk most of the way.he arrived 11pm.covered with ash. We left as soon as the sun rose. we took our car to go to manila where my inlaws where. along the way,we picked up a family of 5.they had been walking the whole night barefoot. They had to leave behind their car covered with ash and their big house and belongings.they rode with us to Manila.
I will never forget that day. search through the internet=Mt Pinatubo to see what it did to that part of the Philippines.
