I guess everyone or almost everyone at one time or another has come across this phrase-Parting is such sweet sorrow- Everytime i meet this phrase i am struck by the seeming contradiction because parting usually implies sadness or sorrow but sweetness or sweet sorrow? How can something sad be sweet at the same time? Is it the same thing as the term bittersweet? When is parting something that can be sweet sorrow? Any ideas out there?

Ah the paradox...
Yes sweet sorrow, bittersweet.
I have 4 children. I realize there will come a time in a few years when my oldest will be leaving for school or to head out on his own. It will be a sorrowful time, but at the same time the sweetness of knowing I have done my best to raise him and set him on his way. The sweetness to know that now he heads out on his own to begin a new life, to accomplish his dreams, to be the man of God he was meant to be.
Yes, part is such sweet sorrow.

That is a very clear example of when parting is such sweet sorrow. Of course whenever you separate or leave someone or someone leaves you, it always is a bit sad because you know you will miss each other but the sweetness of parting is surely explained by what you said. That you feel proud and happy knowing you gave him your best to equip him for facing his own tomorrows, dreams and mission in life. Thanks my friend.That helped demonstrate why parting can be a sweet sorrow.

Allow me to quote Khalil Gibran in his book "The Prophet"
"When you part with your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him
Will be clearer in his absence."
Tell me your views. Cheers :)
