Why do they say, "God bless you", when you hiccup?

This is an opinion from a colleague who is an expert in anatomy and physiology. He says, "People say God bless you, because when you hiccup, you die a millisecond, and then survived it" A hiccup involves the medulla oblongata, which is a part of the brain responsible in part of cardiac function. When you hiccup this function ceases for a millisecond and the heart stops (dying) and then beats again after the hiccup. So there you are folks, in lay man's terms, this is the reason why they say "God bless you", when you hiccup. Do you know of any other reason? Feel free to contribute so we all can learn. Thanks.

I was not aware of people saying "God Bless You" when you hiccup..... Only when people sneeze! One story I heard regarding this for sneezing is that in the Middel Ages it was believed that when a person seneezed their sould left their body; and by someone saying "God Bless You" or even just "Bless You" the sould would instantly return to the body before the Devil took it!

Wow, that's one good explanation. The soul living the body. Thanks for that vital info.

That's quite interesting. I've only heard it said when people sneeze, and with exactly the same information. I wonder where we could actually find out the real background of it. I'd always thought the german response to sheezing made more sense, as they wish you good health.

I've never heard of anyone saying "God bless you" when you hiccup. I have the tern used when someone sneezes and I'm not sure why when that started. Hopefully someone will be able to explain why "God bless you" is used for not only hiccups, but for sneezes too. Lloyd

I thought that was only for sneezes, what could be a good reason for sneezes to say God Bless you. If God sneezes or hiccuped...who blesses Him? hehehe! just a thought.
