Is this problem with optical mouse?

I have a computer with optical mouse. I have been using it for a year plus. Now a days i have a problem. When I click on a folder or file what happens it automatically double clicks (with millisec gap). (In settings the option is set as single click to select). Because of this if i have to select a file, i end up opening the file. And when i need to open a file, i open the file twice. If i have to drag a file to another place, i end up opening the file. This happens might be 4 to 5 times out of 10. This is a real nuisance, esp when i am seriously working. I also seen another system having the same problem in my friend's office. Is it something to do with optical mouse. Have you heard of this problem or have you ever faced such a problem.
