When did you loose your imagination?

Imagination - painting of the word imaginiation

When I was young I had an imaginary horse named Brownie. I remember riding that horse everywhere. It slept in the corner of my room and sometimes woke my younger brother up. Somewhere along the way I lost that horse. Where do imaginary friends go. As we grow up we tend to forget how to imagine something. We loose our ability to believe that ANYTHING is possible. Some might say it is because we see reality but I believe that our reality is more often shaped by our lack of imagination. SUre I would look pretty silly riding Brownie into the office and over to my cube. I would look crazy if I took a handful of imaginary sugar cubes and fed her. I would be committed if in the middle of a phone conversation with a customer I started making a neying noise and then turned and told Brownie to be quiet. BUT, how much more can we accomplish is we would just unleash our imagination and dream the impossible again? How much more enjoyable would life be? How much more would we push ourselves to be what we, in our current state, would never dream to be?

I agree that making the neying noise might not increase your sales but I certainly think it's good to rekindle your imagination and the feeling that ANYTHING is possible. Not just your imagination but dreams and creativity. I find I get more creative if I have lots of time, like when on a holiday (not so much a busy holiday, but a more peaceful holiday). I may start rekindling old dreams, or even get new ones, but then you go back to work and you just get back into the grindstone again and forget about all that stuff .

Funny- I had written in the discussion above a quote that really goes quite well with your comment. If we never reach for the impossible you will never reach the impossible. (That wasn't the quote but its a good one too.) :) thanks for the response

Actually now that you mention it, when I was young I used to write poems, I even wrote a book of poems for an assignment. But now, I don't even remember the last time I wrote a poem! Just goes to show how much creativity has been lost!

Wow I never had an imaginary friend. I feel cheated. I wonder how many people didn't have an imaginary friend. I did play with my brothers, sister and neighborhood children and imagined myself as a teacher or another character but no imaginary friend. I don't think that we lose our imagination. Every time we improvise when we don't have the right tool and grab something else to complete the task we are using our imagination. Every time we have a dream isn't that using our imagination? Maybe we don't lose it but it evolves since as you pointed out people would get the men in white coats after us if we used our imagination the way we did as a child.

Yes I agree our imagination may not go away we just fail at times to act upon it. We limit what we think we can do. So we don't try. The Bible, however, says that with God All things are possible. And I can do All things through Christ who strengthens me. So I hold on to that promise and reach for the impossible. :)

hi double! well i didn't really lose my imagination. i keep on imagining things, even if i am already 33. hehee but i didn't remember having an imaginary friend. i just imagine different things and situations and people at different times. hehe i dunno, i just like getting lost in the world of make-believe, one that exists only in my head. i guess it is our escape from reality huh? and it is the solution to the fact that we can only become one person in our lifetime. hehe take care and God bless you! :-)

thank you spoiled. I too have kept my imagination, but I realize that even at the young age of 37 I do not have the same passion to fulfill the dreams I imagine. Perhaps we need to learn that we can be more if we allow ourselves the freedom. "Sometimes a cubicle can become a prison unless one reaches outside of himself and grasps the impossible" - GGH

I haven't for a minuite lost my imagination. i still use my imagination a lot and it has helped me even get over rough spots by restoring my sense of humor when i needed it most. I also daydream a lot althpugh i have not allowed this to be an obstacle to my acceptance of reality. I love reading books and I can use my imagination to go to all those places in all those stories I read and during the time period in which the story is set. i believe I have a very fertile imagination. I also believe that one should not lose his imagination otherwise it could be a very boring life.

Boring is so true. If we lost our imagination we could nver escape the reality of life. We need that escape every once in a while to keep from being insane. :) Although a little craziness is not bad either.

I want to give example of each of the following .... -) Mental stregth stands best for scientists who discover new things out of imagination -) GOD gift for those who are in the field of cinema/theatre are exceptionally good at imagination . -)Will power for politician like George Bush etc .. whos will derive there imagination -)Efforts apply to all common people who just hit and try as far as imagination is concerned. Very well thought out response. It is nice to hear some logical explainations as well. Dreams and imagination are a vital part of our everyday life on this earth.

Never mind looking crazy...our imagination is what keeps us sane! i can shut myself in my room or go for a drive and park somewhere and be whoever, wherever, whatever I want to be. I have allowed circumstance to keep me where I am in reality but my mind knows there's more out there and I haven't given up on making THAT my reality! Saddle up old Brownie and take her to the office on Monday - tell your boss you're getting in touch with the 'inner' you..... unless of course, you ARE the boss - in which case go all out with the sugar cubes and the neighing!!

Shana, Very funny. I enjoyed reading your response. I love reading responses that make me smile and laugh. You an I are very much alike with our imaginary friends. I, however, had 5 brothers an sisters. I think my imaginary friends were there so I could talk to someone who could not talk back to me. :)

I still got mine. But then I am a fiction writer and we need our imagination to get along and those weird ideas for stories. Oh and with God anything is possible, but but that also means that with our human will, not everything is possible and so we have to have God's help for the miracles. But imagination does not mean pretending you are a lion and turning into one and scaring the neighborhood dog. I can act out having a sword fight with my imaginary adversary, but I would not do it unless I was demonstrating how Robin Hood defeated Guy of Brisbaine and I would do it is if I were playing with my grand daughter and she is not at that stage yet being only fourteen months old. Children believe that anything is possible because they are at the starting point of life, and if things were to go their way, then anything would be possible. I am sure the children of millionaires have their ponies, the training to win the Olympics, are able to live in castles, but it is not reality that keeps us from getting it, it is the lack of money.

Perhaps the lack of maney does play a role, but at the same time a lack of dreams will cause even more damage. I have seen oppressed people do more in their lives than any millionair. So was money the issue. No it was the ability to dream and to reach for that dream. BTW I too am a fiction writer. hmm curious.

We never truly loose our imagination, but it does become dormant as we get older. I think it starts when we go to school. We start learning about the world and the way it works, and we realize that society doesn't look good upon imagination. We are supposed to be rooted in reality. I however, still use my imagination, although for more realistic purposes. I imagine myself rich, I imagine myself helping others to become rich. I imagine what my life will be like once I achieve my goals; the house I will live in, the car I will drive, the things I will do. Imagination is key in reaching your goals, and I for one will never again let my imagination become dormant.

No a loss of imagination is not the problem. I loss of belief is the problem. We take our eyes off of those things that make us who we are. that is why Jesus said "unless you become like one of these (children) you will not enter the kingdom of heaven." What is the biggest difference between adults and chidren? Our belief in the impossible! Thanks for the response

Good discussion! I still like to imagine especially when I am sad! Something will not go to the effort that was required. At the time, at least, we can imagine, we have dreams. Then, your imagination become things. Imagination is reasonable and helpful to some extent. Thus, don't hesitate to imagine

Yes, we need to keep our dreams alive. When we fail to dream we fail to move forward. When we stop moving forward we die. :)

Imagination is good habit to improve ur ideas in the futute world, when i imagine i should be alone otherwise there is no way of imagination in the life

We need our imagination to come up with new ideas and solutions. But sometimes we need to ast more often on those imaginations rather than just letting them sit dormant
