Will Recent Events In Georgia Affect Obama's VP Pick?

What do you think - will the current crisis in Georgia have any effect on who Obama will choose for his running mate, assuming he hasn't already made the choice someone best prepared to deal with foreign policy? I've been saying for quite some time now that my gut feeling as well as my hope - which may mean it's just wishful thinking? - is that Senator Joe Biden will be Obama's choice for VP for several good reasons so if I'm right than I don't think current events will change his mind but I think if he has been leaning toward someone not so well-versed in foreign policy such as Tim Kaine or Kathleen Sebilius (Sp for both!) he may take a close look. What are your thoughts? Annie

I think he made his decision over a month ago. Right now I believe he's holding out to see who McCain picks. He knows that if McCain picks a woman as his running mate, that he may be forced to choose Hillary or lose more former Hillary supporters. At the same time McCain is trying to wait him out for the same reasons.

As a woman I still have a very hard time imagining a Hillary supporter - I mean a TRUE Hillary supporter, not just because she's a woman but because of the issues - voting for McCain. They're just so far apart on so many key issues for women, once again especially for women who were die-hard Hillary supporters. I certainly could be wrong and I don't mean this as an attack or even a criticism against either candidate, it's just how I see it. One thing I do believe and that's if Obama were to choose a woman other than Hillary that would upset some women. Reading your response makes me think of how the pundits have been discussing this; some have said much the same as you, that Obama has known for some time and is just waiting to make his announcement while I heard one say today that most candidates don't actually make up their minds until the very moment they make their announcement. I'm not sure who said that because I was here online and just listening to the TV in the next room, but I don't quite buy into that. Out of curiosity, what women do you think McCain could be considering? Annie

Well polls showed that roughly 1/3 of Hillary's supporters went to McCain. That's a pretty big chunk right there. Obviously he differs from her heavily on many issues, but there are other factors to consider. 1. Hillary supporters are jaded and blame Obama and the media for vilifying her. 2. Many people chose her over Obama because he lacked experience. If they are more concerned with experience than other issues McCain is the obvious choice. 3. They are offended by the way the DNC treated Hillary and the way her supporters in Florida and Michigan were disenfranchise. Since Obama opposed every attempt to get the votes counted they want to support his opponent. I think Sarah Palin and Carly Fiorina are the most likely women he would pick. I'm really hoping he picks Sarah Palin as I think she would be the best for his campaign. Unfortunately most news agencies are ranking her pretty low on his short list. I'm afraid he'll choose either Charlie Crist or Tim Pawlenty and neither will really give a significant boost to his campaign. Obviously Florida's an important state, but I'm sure he can win that without choosing Crist as a running mate.

The poll I read was on cnn.com and it was a few weeks after Hillary dropped out of the race. It's possible, and likely, that the number of defectors has decreased since then which is why you're seeing different numbers than I did. I really don't think the investigation of Sarah Palin is going anywhere as there really is no evidence of any wrongdoing on her part. It's just one bitter ex-employee trying to get revenge. Either way I still think she's the best chance he has of winning. Romney and Lieberman are the only others that may help him. Obama's choice really doesn't matter unless he picks Clinton, or makes the mistake of picking another woman, or a young VP. Another woman would alienate Clinton supporters, and a young VP would make them the ticket of inexperience.

I guess I haven't thought too much about it, I see the first response and it has something that I have thought. I would have to say landslide lol. I don't know if the VP really does anything but if the current one sets the bar for Obama's then you know Obama could pick Barney, yes the big purple dinosaur and he would do just fine, although I don't think Barney will be shooting anyone lol.

There was actually a recent article about best and worst VP picks. D!ck Cheney was in the top 5 and the bottom 5. He was in the top 5 because he was a good choice to help get Bush elected, and in the bottom 5 because he's been just one more problem in the Bush administration. Prior to 2000 he had an excellent reputation and like most VP picks, didn't have skeletons in his closet. The only concerns people had were over his health when Bush chose him.

I'm in the dark over Obama's VP choice, and I think the Russia/Georgia crisis will probably be mishandled so badly by Bush and Co. that it'll probably end up a plus for the Dems, and won't really have any effect on Obama's pick. He, most likely, has someone in mind, and is searching the closet for skeletons. If he goes with a woman other than Hillary, her supporters will go ballistic...man, he's got a rough row to hoe.
