What do you think of MLMs?

Companies like Amway/Quixtar (quick start, yeah right), Mary Kay, Herbalife, etc. You are invited to a meeting to learn about a business opportunity. Your upline--or sponsor persuades you to get in, and to bring other people along, who become your downline. Have you tried one of these? What is your take on these?

The bad part about MLM programs is that they require you to buy more than you need on a monthly basis and in most cases don't pay much of a commission on sales you make. I would have loved to join a program that sells vitamins because I could use them daily. But when you have to purchase at least one bottle that contains 90 or 100 pills and you're only required to take 1 a day...c'mon! What am I supposed to do with the rest of the pills? Stan

I was once with Amway. The good part about being with that group is it created a community, a family atmosphere. When we went to our functions, and went out of town together, a union was created between upline and downline, as well as within the line. But the bad thing is, I think there is some deception going on. They make it sound easier to recruit downline than it actually is. Another form of abuse is when an upline tries to control your life. I was in school, and my upline tried to push me to drop my meal plan, only to buy Amway food. What if it ran out before the end of the month? My meal card was convenient. All I had to do was use it, and financial aid was paying my way anyway. Anyone who asks you to follow them without question has the makings of a cult.
