came across this article and it really gave me food for thought. i know that drinking too much red bull is bad for me. however, this came as a real shocker. i rely on red bull on days that i feel tired and lethargic. it also helps when i need to stay awake and can't afford to feel sleepy. now that the study points out that one can is enough to increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke, i really start to wonder if i should stop drinking it totally. it's pretty scary to know that one can is enough to cause so much damage. Red Bull 'ups stroke risk' CANBERRA: Just one can of the popular energy drink Red Bull can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke, even in young people, Australian medical researchers said yesterday. Dr Scott Willoughby, from the Car-diovascular Research Centre at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, and his team tested the cardiovascular systems of 30 adults an hour before and after they drank a 250ml can of sugar-free Red Bull. They found that the caffeine-loaded beverage, popular with students and sports buffs, caused the blood to become sticky, a precursor to cardio-vascular problems such as strokes, an Australian newspaper said. Red Bull Australia spokesman Linda Rychter said the report would be assessed by the company's head office in Austria. 'The study does not show effects which would go beyond that of drinking a cup of coffee. Therefore, the reported results...lie within the normal physiological range,' she told Reuters. Red Bull is banned in Norway, Uru-guay and Denmark because of health risks listed on its cans, but 3.5 billion cans were sold in 143 nations last year. REUTERS

I drink a lot of redbull to be more active in the night when I need to stay awake the whole night to study and to do research. It certainly helps us to be more active when we need the body to be more active. But after reading your arcticle I am really afraid where this habit of mine would lead me too. I plan to take redbull only when it is utmost needed from now onwards. Thank you!!

yes that's my main use of red bull too. It really helps me stay awake when I drive long distance at night. It also helps when I'm cramming for an exam on the following day. From the article it seems that red bull causes the blood to thicken. Maybe drinking large amount of water will help? I'm not too sure about that so I guess I'll just cut down on my consumption for the time being. Cheers ;p

i do drink around 2 litres of water. however, i drink more on days i go donate blood. there was once when i didn't drink water for the whole morning and my blood didn't flow. the nurse told me that i didn't drink enough water. some of the water we drink actually replenishes our blood plasma. so from now i always drink a lot of water before going to donate blood. cheers ;p

I totally agree with you that anything artificial is not good. However sometimes I just need that extra boost. I guess I'll cut down on my consumption. Or maybe I'll try to find substitute for it. I know getting a good night's sleep is the best way but I don't always manage to get it. Cheers ;p

well I'm not too sure if I'll totally swear off red bull. But the article will make me think twice and again when I feel like having one. The boost it provides really help me through a lot of long days. However the health risks that comes with the boosts makes it less attractive. The article really scare me enough to actually cut down on red bull. Thanks for the comment and concern. Cheers ;p

That is scary! I don't drink it all the time but sometimes when I have a night out I have vodka and redbull so would have a few cans of redbull during the night at least - maybe from now on i'll have vodka and coke!

hi frankie, yes i totally agree that it's scary! i've had red bull on various occasions. i don't think i can even begin counting the amount of red bull i've had. guess i've got to watch my intake now. also to take red bull with lots of water. i might not be able to negate all the damage but at least some is better than none. cheers ;p

yes I definitely believe you about not wanting to get a stroke. I've seen my aunt who got one on her struggle to recovery. She was lucky enough to regain mobility. However several mild strokes followed, as what the doctor had highlighted. She is still mobile but has got to be on blood thinners for the rest of her life. That means she got to be careful and not get cuts as she won't clot like we'd do. Cheers ;p

I think RedBull tastes bad. Therefore I wouldn't drink it. Does the study apply to all energy drinks or just RedBull?

I actually quite like the taste of red bull. Maybe different people have different tastes. The study was conducted specifically with red bull. It could be due to the caffeine content. I'm not too sureif it'll apply to other energy drinks as well. However according to the red bull spokesman it akin to the effect of having a cup of coffee. But that's the red bill people speaking so we can't be sure if we can trust that. I don't think I'll go off red bull altogether but I'll definitely cut down. Cheers ;p

Hey there, I think it's OK to drink so much sugar and calorie as long as you burn it by exercising or doing active work. I read an article on Micheal Phelps diet and he takes 12000 calorie per day because he needs it so that he can have enough enerdy to do work. There's always a health risk in what we eat. McDOnald's burgers are not healthy.I think it really comes down to how active you are.

hi thanks for pointing that out. It is important to burn as much calories as we take as that will help us maintain a healthy weight. Obesity is the top cause of many chronic illnesses. I don't take red bull regularly so that's a relief. However it does make me think twice before reaching for another can. Cheers ;p
