Not again!?!

There's another hurricane approaching. Even though we've had good luck for the past several years, everybody's battening down the hatches. I hear hammering outside, as neighbors who don't have hurrican shutters put plywood over their doors and windows. I have shutters, but I hate feeling like I live in a cave, so I don't shut them until I really have to, and let the sun in as long as I can.
Of course, part of July every year is devoted to stocking up on hurricane supplies, such as bottles water, canned food, batteries for the flashlights and radios, etc. That's a given, just in case. But we're used to getting a ton of warning time. This time, that's not the case. They're telling us we're in a cone of uncertainty, so that we may or may not get the storm. Science has made huge strides, but storms just do what they want and defy forecasting sometimes.
Naturally, if we are hit, I'll miss you all for a while. Computers and other appliances have to be unplugged in case of a hit, and then we usually go without electricity for several days or even weeks, depending on how bad the hit is.
Why do I seem so calm? This is really nerve-wracking! I'm just myLotting away as the basketball games go on in the Olympics -- just another day in Paradise!

Thank you, Sanjana. They're still saying it's a cone of uncertainty, but we're in it. Just in case, whether or not it's a real problem, school;s been cancelled for tomorrow. I LOVE having another day off. I hope we don't lose the electricity so I can use the computer.

Hi, Roshand!
It's a little scary, but they've announced that, since it's still uncertain where the thing's going at this point, schools will be closed tomorrow, just in case ...
I LOVE having another day off!

Hey Cobra,
Just hold onto your hat. How close to the coast are you? Or does it really matter in Miami? I'm in East Orlando, so I should just get the rain and some of the winds. We haven't had a hurricane since my hubby and I moved into this house. I hope we picked a good one. I will miss everyone as well. Hopefully not for too long. Good luck Cobra. We still have a couple of days, so see you tomorrow.

Hurricanes aren't particularly about the coast. I'm a few miles inland, but we get the storms full-strength anyway. I hope it decides to turn into the open ocean so nobody has to be hurt.

Many of us wish we could do that. Houses here almost never have basements, though, because the water table is too close to the surface. Just a couple of feet of digging will find you water immediately, so basements just don't work!
Thanks for the suggestion.
We usually spend the time of the "hit" in a bathtub, in an interior bathroom that has no windows, if possible, and we pull a mattress up against the bathroo door to protect us in case the storm takes the roof or walls, or whatever.

Thanks. All the preparations are complete, and we're just waiting as the weather worsens. It's not expected to be too bad, and at least we're not expected to fight this weather to go to work!
