how does something get to be "hot" in mylot?

Do you have any idea how the "hot" category works? I just wondered because i have a discussion with 28 responses and I can't see it in the first few pages of hot, even though other discussions with way less responses (as low as 9) are showing up on these pages as hot. Even one of my own with 9 is showing up before the one with 28 - seems a bit illogical. Of course there are also some discussions with more responses (like 40 or 50) so this makes sense that they would be hot, but the rest doesn't seem logical (a 9 is hotter than 28?)!
