Debt-Free at Long Last... FINALLY!!!

It has taken me over 5 years to get out of credit card debt. Not that I spent more than what I made; no. Just that really HUGE problems would always arise once i finally got the sum of money saved up to pay off a card. For instance, it took me two years to save up $2,000.00 andwhat do you know, but I end up having to miss work due to being hopsitalized for kidney stones. Needless to say, that $2,000 I had saved up toward paying off my card ended up having to be used towards bills since I was out of work for 1 1/2 months.
I was upset at this, but figured, "well, I'll just have to try again." So I did. Another 1 1/2 yrs later, I had managed to save up the money a little quicker, and I thought I'd finally have the stuoid thing paid off for sure. Nope. Car ended up dying on interstate 95 and I had to use that money, plus another $500 (total of $2500) to buy another used car. Thankfully, this car is much better - this was back in Oct. of '07. Just recently, after a third attempt at trying to save up the money to pay off the card, I ended up having to use that money to move on, since my landlord failed to tell me (and other tennants) that the building was going to be remodeled, and that we had one month to move out. I was floored!!
Well, about four days ago, I received my tuition reimbursement check in the mail. It was just enough to pay off that credit card, PLUS another one! (The other one only had a small balance of $400). So, now I am debt free and enjoying it to the hilt! I'm having a bill burning party tomorrow to celebrate! (Yes, seriously - I am having a bill burning party.)
Has anyone else here been in the same situation and able to get out of it? How were you able to do it?

Hello there ihearttinytim!
Congratulations for being Debt-Free! It must have really been one helluva journey to finally be debt-free. A lot of people are aiming at that but are having a difficult time getting there. I have surrendered three of my credit cards so that I will be able to save more money rather than using it to pay off my debts. I am now maintaining just one card which I believe is really important for me as I travel quite very often so I definitely need one. You know, just in case... I must admit though that it was not that easy paying all those bills. I am glad I was able to do it though. Now, I am a little more careful in spending my hard earned money. Good luck to your party!

Congrats,
Your persistence paid off. I just love your midset, it demonstrates that goals are doable as long as one stays focused.
I'm on a mission right now to get the 2 cards I have paid off. I'm on a hardship plan. Best wishes on your future endeavours.
