Was this proper for them to do? Could they?

Years ago I went with my aunt to the store. I had a purple purse that had a clip on type thing that could hold cigarettes, or even a cellphone. I held my change and dollars in there. My aunt and I were to meet outside of the entrance of the wal*mart we were at, so when I got done I went to the entrance. A wal mart greeter stopped me and even though I ignored her she persisted, I got angry but let her look into my change clip on or "purse" to see that there were no cigarettes which she had accused me of. At this time I do not believe that there was a register in front of the cigarette cases but I could not open them if I tried because they were locked. Do you think that it was right for this employee to embarrass me? I actually went out a different exit then I was supposed to meet my aunt, and sat on a bench to wait because I was so humiliated. I was to young to smoke, I didn't want to then and I don't want to now that I am of age.
So do you think it was right for her to embarrass me?
Do you think she had any jurisdiction to search my "purse"? I mean I couldn't get in to the counter if I wanted to, even she should have known that.
What would you have done? I told my fiance that I should have reported her, but I was to embarrassed and to young to think of that.

I would have demanded a manager...and when none were found I would have made a nice big scene about the stupidity of some employees. Some of these cashiers and such, seem to think they are cops or something, they don't have any authority to search you or your belongings. If they suspect you of stealing something then they can call the police and they can search you.

I was younger when this happened so I probably would have just looked like a bratty little kid if anything else. I appreciate the response.

That was not proper of her, she should not have even asked to search your purse or change purse. It's terrible that she would have done that. I would have reported her as well. They cannot ask to search anything unless the little buzzer thing goes off.

Yes, I know that they can not unless the "buzzer" goes off. The door alarm did not though so I am not sure what possessed her to search me. I appreciate the response.

At least in the area that I live in all of the stores have a right to check all bags, purses, or packages at anytime. Usually you would have to act suspicions for them to do that, but they are allowed.
You would be surprized at how people steal from stores. I even watched a video years ago of someone putting a tv between thier legs when wearing either a long coat or even a dress and walk out the the store looking normal! I have stopped shop lifters a few times at places that I have worked. It just puts you into shock how people do steal things.
I was at Wallmart and this couple had a baby sitting in a seat and placed in the larger part of the buggy. The alarm went off and they did find something in the buggy and the greeeter took that out, but the alarm still went off when they went back through. Here, the guy used to work for them and probly did have something else in the buggy under or in the babies car seat.
Now, for you, this must have happened a bit of time ago and I would just blow it off as the greeter doing thier job and was not picking on you, but just might have seen people with your type of purse steal something before, or you could look like someone they have been looking for that does some type of tricks.
