I'll Paddle In It, Love Being Near Or On It But Won't Swim Or Dive In The Sea!

I would love to go scuba diving but I won't even swim in the sea although I do love to swim but only in a pool. I am not a fearful person but for some reason I won't go into the water. Do you think this stems from seeing Jaws in my childhood? Have I a fear of being under water as I love all activities on, near or above it? Do you go into the water? Have you been diving and if so where and did you enjoy? I love to go out in boats with clear glass bottoms to see the wonders beneath but for some reason I can't bring myself to take the plunge. I live 10 minutes walk from the sea too so I feel I am missing out on so much. Ellie :D

it is just a matter of mind over matter. if you are adventurous then you can overcome this fear, it is all in the mind the world under water is so wonderful and peaceful, think of it as if it is your first time to drive a car.

I have been swimming in the ocean before, It is rather nice and not scary. However this is something you have to answer for yourself, what scares you about diving, is it the fear of something happening to your air supply, are you afraid of the water in general, sharks etc. Make a list, brain storm things and ask about your past as a kid if you have older living relatives, and if they know of anything that might have happened when you were younger.

Hi Lira, I have been asking myself these questions and there could be one of three reasons all all put together and it would make sense. My mother was always scared of water as a child so perhaps I picked up of her fear as she never swam at all not even in a pool. I fell into a lock with flared denim jeans on and the weight of the jeans wet dragged me under even though I could swim and I had to be rescued and also when I was a child I saw jaws and didn' want to go into the sea but my brother did and teased me but that year the water had been very warm and sharks were in fact spotted so I didn't feel silly at all. I have decied to set myself a goal though to be able to swim and dive by next summer but it would need to be in clear safe water. Ellie :D

I love the ocean, it's my favorite place. I've only been up and down the Pacific coastline. Northern California and Southern Oregon have the best beaches, but bring a hooded sweatshirt, it's cold and windy alot of the time. I refuse to get in it though. At least, not past my knees. I have been watching "Jaws" since I was about 3, and I am sure that the movie is the reason why I don't swim in the ocean. I love to swim and I have no fear of drowning, but I have a very real fear of being eaten by a shark. No thanks. I know better than to mess in someone else's backyard, and Great Whites like to hang out in the water near my favorite spots. Ironically, I am watching "Jaws" right now on tv.

Hi Jessigirl, So you are like me then love being near it or paddling but not go in. Here in the UK we get a lot of seaweed and the water is very unclear so even paddling if I get some tangled around my leg I totally freak and run out. I remeber as a child the years Jaws came out and we were on holiday at Barry Island which is off the Bristol Channel and my brother asked if I was going in the sea and I said no, a shark might get me, he said don't be silly we don't get sharks in England but I still wouldn't go in and that year as the water was so warm there were in fact quite a few sharks spotted, harmless ones but sharks so I laughed at him and said see I told you as kids do. Great Whites hang out in the water where you are, whoah, I would even paddle very carefully. I love to swim also but only will use the pool, remember even the lagoon isn't safe LOL. How bizzarre that you should be watching right at this moment. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Yes, some people are afraid of going underwater. I can't swim for the life of me but I have tried snorkeling before and it was great. I would do it again provided we snorkel in the same circumstance because I'm afraid I cannot depend on the life vest alone. I feel like I'm missing out too. Once or twice in a year I go to the beach if my friends invite me but I don't really know how to swim. We used to go to the beach frequently as a family when we were kids. I just don't understand why I didn't ever learn how to swim. I wouldn't dare try the diving. I could probably motivate myself to learn how to swim, that's it. I think I'm just not much of a water person myself.

Hi Joliefille, My mother was always afraid of water and I remember as a child she would never even go for a paddle or in a pool but she moved to Spain in 2003 and managed in her late fifties to finally learn to swim as it was so hot out there that she made use of the pool. It is never to late to learn. I have set myself a goal to be able to siwm in the sea by next summer to overcome this fear. Ellie :D

hey hun sometimes we have weird fears for absolutely no reason we can think of are you scared of sharks? or drowning? or do you just not like th whole submerged sensation? It my dream to live by the sea i love the water when i'm on hol no matter where it is you can always find me near the sea or in it or on it. I love boats, swimming (providing it isn't to cold -illnesss!) so i'm a little bit envious, i wouldn't worry about it just enjoy what 2you do love to do near the water just try not t pass your fear on to your children. ps i have a strange fear of having things tight near my neck -i freak out if theres anything there no reason why!!! i joke i must have been hung in a past life or had my head chopped off because i feel nervous for no apparent reason when i walk under those barrier that you get at carparks and stuff. I always rush past like a complete barmpot. Silly i know!! :)

Hi Mands, My dream as a child was to always live by the sea and years ago I also found a slate with a picture painted on it of a cottage on a hilside overlooking the sea fo 80p at a carboot, I placed in on my mantle piece determined that one day I would live in a place just like that and in 2000 I packed everything up and leaving with just my daughter and a few essentials that would fit into the car I left for the sea. I managed to rent a flat immediately, started my own business and now I have achieved my dream and have that house on a hill by the sea. Happy, happy, happy. The only thing I miss about my old life are my friends but they visit frequently and I do still go back to visit them from time to time too. I count my blessings daily. After posting this discussion I have now set myself a goal to swim and dive in the sea but preferably on holiday in clear water by next summer. I am not sure what it is but here in the UK we get a lot of seaweed and I find if some wrpas itself around my leg I just totally freak, its not actually knowing what is is that freaks me I think, strange as not many things phase me. You mentioning hanging or head chopped off in a previous life, I always feel prehaps I was in a shipwreck or I definitely helped smugglers or something conected with the sea and my favourite place is called Smugglers Cove and you have to go through a real smugglers tunnel to get to it, amazing place so I can understand the barrier thing with you, I am the same in car washes too and always duck when the thing comes over the windscreen. Jaws was my favorite movie and I was a dare devil! A shark was sighted out in the ocean near the shore, so they were telling people not to swim to far! I went out to where the sighting was and felt something swim past my leg every since then it it has kinda creeped me out lol! So... no more swimming in the ocean anymore.

Whoah, I would never have done that, it was probably just a fish but the fact that you knew a shark had been spotted was what had you freaked eh! I will get as far as my waist at the moment then I will feel something tangle around my legs, usually seaweed but thats it I'm outta there so I can understand why you don't now. I have set myself a goal though to be swimming and diving in the sea by next summer. Ellie :D

I allmost drowned as a kid on 2 different occaissions, also my motor skills aren't that good so learning how to swim is hard on it's own. I got so scared of drowning that I never learned how to swim again. My mom says I know how to swim and if neccessairy will do so, but I just don't remember and can't believe it's true. I don't go under water with my ears or eyes, it reminds me to much of the drowning some way. You might have the same with looking over the water, affraid something might pop up. Perhaps if you were looking under water it would help as you would 'see everything, or better said nothing, coming'. Best way of getting over a fear is to face it, I tried it but I got freaked out both times. I won't give up and I'm still trying but traumas and fears can be rather hard to face.

I do love the water and am like a fish in it.....I hope someday you'll overcome your fear but since I can't overcome my fear of heights who am I to give advice! LOL

Hi Jill, I wonder if it is because we don't have clear water off the UK and if I was in a clear water area I would be able to. I like to se what is around and beneath me I suppose. My daughter went diving when in Fiji and loved it and living so close to the sea I really wish I could experience more than I do, I have tried but I will get to about my waist and some seaweed or something will wrap itself around my leg and I'm outta there LOL. Hi ellie333. I do go in to the ocean. And it is such a rush! I love it! I swim parallel with the shore, about 10 or 15 feet out, and it is a trip! Hope you will try it. I have never been SCUBA diving. But I do have a cheap little snorkel set that I practice with in the pool. I always tell my husband that we will go snorkeling in the ocean someday. But, we haven't gone yet. Strangely, it is actually difficult to let your body breathe when you are under water. I find that I just want to keep holding and holding my breath, even though I have that tube thing in my mouth that leads to above the water's surface. I know it is going to allow me to take in air, but it's still difficult to let myself breathe. The next time we go to Englewood Beach to swim in the ocean, I'm gonna try to remember my cheap little snorkeling gear to see what I can see along the edge of the ocean. Hm, I do not know if it is a fear you have, do you actually feel fear when you go to the ocean's edge? If you have several friends who like to go to the beach, perhaps you could plan a morning or afternoon to go with all of them and have plenty of friends for support and safety nearby. Good luck, ellie333. Sometimes, when we embrace our fears, great adventures lie ahead.

Super idea, setting a goal. Oh, I think I'd do the same thing if something wrapped around my leg underwater and I couldn't actually see it. That would be creepy. The water down here where we live is crystal blue in the ocean. If I don't go too far out, I can pretty much see some of what's beneath the surface of the water. That is great that you are planning to get some water training. It's smart to get training from "experts" in their fields. Can't wait to hear about that trip!

I have set myselg a goal though to save, train and book a holiday in an area with clear safe waters to go diving in by next summer, so I will overcome it as I enjoy all other aspects of the sea. Hi Tessa, I think maybe I will need to go abroad to clear water as I'm fine going under water in a pool but not in the sea. I have tried to and will get as far as maybe my waist and suddenly some seaweed will tangle round my legs and thats it I'm running back to the beach. My daughter loves diving and I would trust her 100%, perhaps I will go to a dive school as they train in pools initially to get me comfortable and they take the plunge as I have always wanted to. I am a bit fearful of the see also. Although I go out into it every year I go on vacation in Jamaica. I stay in shallow water although I know that isn't a guarantee that sharks wont attack. I don't think I would go into the ocean in Florida or California just because of headline making shark attacks.

Hi Ellie. I live near the sea and that is fortunate for me because I love the ocean. The sea water is far too cold to swim in and the sinking mud at low tide is a danger. Paddling is lovely to do when it is high tide. I adore walking on the pier, what left there is after the fire. In warm or hot countries I love swimming in the sea in calm water and I am keen on snorkeling around coral reefs. I like to see sting rays and small sharks. I have been lucky enough to swim with a manta ray and I have seen dolphins. I have stayed perfectly safe. Large sharks usually stay in the deep water, inside the reef are lovely colorful fish and harmless sharks. I am not sure that with my ear problems diving would suit me, but snorkeling is cheap and a wonderfully exciting activity. When I was 20 I snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef. Wow! Every one us is scared of something and I can understand you are a bit afraid of the water. When I swim I keep my head above water, with snorkeling gear on I am fine to do that. I don't jump into or dive into pools I climb down the steps. Good luck. Maxine

Hi Maxine, yes you are not that far away from me really here in the UK, I think I have only been to Weston-super-Mare once though. I agree the water is also very cold and the tides can be dangerous especially near the estuaries. I love to be near to and paddle though but I think in clear warmer water I would probably feel safe swimming. I have set it as a goal for next summer anyway. Ellie :D

You are, put on your trunks and dive in. Jaws won't get you, he's on display in Hollywood. When we moved to Florida for a time our kids ran straight into the ocean, they didn't have a care in the world. You should take that approach and just go for it. The worst thing that will happen is you'll get a mouth full of sea water and you won't salt your food for a while, other than that I want to see pictures of you conquering your fear.

I'm a bit like you, Ellie. I don't like to be out of my depth in water (the feeling of nothing underneath my feet is very alarming) - and I get very seasick on boats. The rest of the family scuba dive, and our eldest daughter and her husband have a 40ft ex-fishing boat which they take out on weekends for picnics and dolphin/whale spotting - but I've found I spend most of the time leaning over the railings being sick! I'd love to live with a view of the ocean one day, but walking along the beach and having a bit of a paddle (up to the ankles only) is as far as I want to get!

Oh ellie, I feel the same way! I just love the water. I love to swim too, but only in a pool. I love being on the beach and staring at the ocean, but I'm also afraid of going in the water. I don't like not knowing what might be waiting underneath! I don't like swimming with the fishes! Not even little ones! I'm easily grossed out and I am also afraid of JAWS! There have been too many shark attacks and I just don't want to be shark food so I choose to just look at the ocean from the beach. I haven't been in the ocean for years now. I used to go in, but I am nust too afraid now. If I did go in it would be just to get wet.

Hi Opal, As far as I am aware I don't think there has ever been a shark attack off off UK beaches so this bit shouldn't really bother me but as the water is not clear it is the fact I can't see what it is that freaks me like when seaweed gets tangled round my legs I just freak as have tried to go out to swim but get as far as my waist usually then I'm running back. Thanks for sharing that you are the same Opal. I do intend to overcome this though by next summer. Ellie :D
