An abbreviation (from Latin brevis "short") is a shortened form of a word or phrase. Usually, but not always, it consists of a letter or group of letters taken from the word or phrase. For example, the word "abbreviation" can itself be represented by the abbreviation "abbr." or "abbrev."
There is actually a website dedicated to all sorts of abbreviations.
According to some estimates, there are over 190,000 abbreviations, let's see how many we can think of (include the abbreviation and what it stands for).

I think those 190,000 abbreviations probably don't include all the news ones which have been invented for texting messages or for emailing and posting (lol).
I can think of plenty we use in every day speech, (don't, isn't, can't) and some Latin ones (e.g. etc.). We also address each other as Mr and Mrs, not Mister or Mistress. The doctor is call Dr. The reverend minister is call Rev. The professor is called Prof. The bachelor of arts is a BA.
You may live in a St, Ave or Rd not a Street, Avenue or Road. You reside in the USA or UK, not the United States of America or United Kingdom.
Those are just a few I can think of for now.
